I have a 97 I30T and the heated seats only work if I'm sitting in the car. This defeats the whole purpose of heated seats because with leather the seats are extremely cold in the winter.

My brother has a VW Jetta and a friend of mine has a Mazda Millenia both with heated seats that they turn on while letting the car warm up. When they go out after letting the cars warm up their seats are nice and toasty. Is Nissan/Infiniti the only manufacturer that designed them this way. Why would they do that?

Pressure sensors.

Prevents damage to the leather from too much heat. If you'll notice, the Infiniti seat heaters also cycle off and on.

Can the sensors be turned off or modified in any way?

So that I can turn them on while letting the car warm up and they'll be nice and toasty by the time I sit in them. It gets really cold up here in the Northeast during the winter and seats can be frigid in the morning.

They do this anyway, with mine anyway... Normally they take about 3 mins to get goin when I turn them on right when i sit down, but when i let them go with the car warming up, it only takes about a min.....

This will explain your seat heater concern. First off, there are no such thing as a pressure sensor in an Infiniti I-30 seat heater. The system only has a power supply from the seat heater switch in turn is thermostatic controlled. The reason you dont feel as much heat when your not sitting, the heating element is not in direct contact with the surface of the seat. The element is located away from the seat surface, when you sit down on the seat, you are just making the distance from the element to the seat cover closer therefore it will feel warmer faster when you are sitting in the seat. The thermostat is not adjustable, preset from the factory. The seat heater system is a very simple circuit and very rare have I seen any trouble with the system.

Heated seats! You dudes got heated seats?! In a Gen 1? What year did that start? Maybe that's one of the reason the early Gen 1's are faster, we don't lose any horsepower to the heat soaking into our butts. Seriously, I froze my buttwocks off this morning, a great day on the east coast to find out you guys got heated seats. I wonder if they could be retrofitted? Hmmmm, I need passenger side leather, maybe I swap both seats for later versions, anybody know if the later Gen 1 seats are a direct bolt in to a 92? The electronics for the heaters should be easy right?

The 94s is when it started....

There are aftermarket heated seats you can get that go right under the seat covers..... But the seats should bolt right in because they use the old style seat in the 94 and 95 manual....

Don't you all wear warm woolen trousers in New England winters anymore? :D

I surely did when I lived there. Didn't need bun warmers! :D
