UPDATE TIME! So, for the past couple weeks, I've been running around with big gaping holes in my hatch. Not too bad, covered them with primer and duct tape to keep the rust and dust at bay. My buddy has a welder and a garage, so we've been playing schedule tag. Last weekend we were supposed to have a "man date" but his wife was sick so he had to watch their newborn. This weekend she had friends over, so the conversation went something like"Hi Mrs. Hester, it's Christian. Can Chad come out and play?"She took off with her buddies and the kid, leaving me and Chad alone with a fully stocked garage, a couple projects, a radio blasting classic rock, and a fridge full of scrumptious suds.As a quick recap, here's what the hatch looked like
I called them "speed holes".They make the car go faster.
Took the hatch plastic stuff off, revealing daylight, and erroneous pieces. This obviously needed to come out. Not only does it look somewhat odd, stranded up there on the driver side of the hatch glass, it gets no use down here in consistently sunny Sandy Eggo. Quick rundown on how to remove your rear hatch wiperStep 1:Pry up the little plastic piece on the base of the wiper arm. A flat head screwdriver will work just fine. Be gentle but firm. It will end up looking like this.
Then you can use a socket to torque off the nut. That sounded dirty......
If you're like me, that nut has been in place longer than some of our board members have been alive. It takes some finesse. And by finesse, I mean the willingness to torque on that nut like your manhood was trapped under it.
After that, take off the wiper arm, then undo the nuts holding the wiper motor in place. Carefully take the motor out, without dragging the control arm through the hole. Badness. You will have something resembling this,
Sunlight streaming through the now ginormous hole in your hatch will depend on local weather conditions.
Now to fill the holes!
We got everything all lined up, and the welder seemed to be all up round, until we tried to turn on the gas and.......nothing. No gas. Outta gas. Dag nabbit. Next option: BONDO!
Bondo: That wonderfully ubiquitous pinkish substance that is the blessing and bane of bodywork, binding and bonding big blemishes before being bestowed blame by bodies beknighted with banality. Big blobs bemuse and banish bangs, by binding Bondo to bodywork like a bodyshop bard. My basis of being so benign to Bondo, where others are beleagured with badness, is because of my barely bang up job. You may call it simply....B.
Yeah, I got flow.....kind of....for a geeky white guy....
Anyhoo.....
My first attempt at bondo failed miserable, because I couldn't seem to get this gooey substance to stretch across the holes without falling through and creating large pinkish turds that rattled around like rocks in my hatch. THIS was the solution!
The mesh stuff can be cut to size, and is adhesive on one side. However, if there is ANY dust, paint flecks, dirt, grime or grease, it will fall away. Also, if it's too hot, it will fall off. Today was exceptionally hot, and the flat black hatch wasn't helping the heat issue any. Tape can work until the bondo cures. It comes through the mesh like a playdoh fun factory, and hardens, holding the patch and the mesh in place. Pretty nifty idea!
We hit it with what was left in the rattlecans, just barely covering it. I need to hit it with some glazing putty and paint again, but this will do until I can get everything together.
After that, I helped Chad remove the hood on his 1970 Duster, and drop the motor/transmission in it. Good stuff, yay for wrench time.
Chad is the dude lighting a cigarette next to the Duster. We've served together for about 8 years now, first on the mighty Jimmy Carter, then down here in San Diego. He helped me get started when all I knew about cars was which hole the gas went in and which pedal made it go. He's still the Yenko Yoda, especially compared to me.
More to come as it gets done!
I think when she's finally all done, pretty, show quality, I'm getting a vanity plate the reads "REVENGE"
