Why 2 water temp sensors?

So on the last picture of this page: http://www.z32photoguide.com/sensors.html it shows a coolant temp and water temp sensor. It appears that the water temp sensor goes directly to the gauge on the dash and the coolant temp sensor goes into the ECU. Is that correct and if so, since I'm not running a dashboard, can I just not wire up the water temp sensor?

Sure, but how are you going to monitor temp?

I'll be running an aftermarket water temp gauge, but i was cutting up the wiring harness to reduce extra wires and as I was cutting out connectors I cut that wire. Just wanted to make sure I can run a direct wire to the gauge and not mess anything up with the ECU. Thanks for the quick reply.

Yeah the one for the gauge is not needed, just the one for the ecu.
