In their KA/SR/CA/RB ?

did you happen to measure the standing height of the OEM spring vs. the Tomei/BC/whatever aftermarket spring you installed ?

my ca18 has a standard spring height of 43.1mm

the Tomei spring measures 41.0mm

The set height for both springs is supposed to be 35mm according to Tomei. That would mean that I would need to shim the bottom of the spring with a thicker spring seat washer to get the desired valve spring set height.

did anybody go this extra step, or did you guys just drop your springs in and call it good?

Greg

Nah sorry didn't measure. Didn't have to. But if you need the height on stock springs I still got mine.

its the spring rate you should be worried about..after all..your trying to eleiminate valve float with after market springs..as far as the hight of the spring being different..did you take into thought that spring rate and hight are meshured under a preload contion?..like as when they are seated with there retainers...so relax man..dont look down on others for not slapping a mic on the spring..couse it really makes no difference when they are not installed and seated..now..if there was a difference when the spring was seated from original oem hight..then you would have an issue.

i run BC duels with Ti retainers.

it is really important when you installed valve spring to reach 35.0mm. You have correct products. Please see following our recommendation. Standard height(㎜) Set height(㎜) Lift height(㎜) Set load(kgf) Lift load(kgf) TOMEI 41.0 35.0 25.0 24.2±7% 80.6±7% STD 43.1 35.0 26.5 24.0 54.7 Hello, yes we do have different parts number for valve spring seats- goes by thickness.Parts number #162001 0.2mm, #162002 0.3mm, #162003 0.5mm and 1 set come with 8 pieces.

set height of the keepers in the valve stem groove is what needs to be taken into consideration. Im not looking down on anybody for not measuring their springs static height.

I don't think static spring height is the issue. Different spring manufacturers will use different wire diameters to make the spring. The bigger the wire the stronger the spring. If the wire is too big then you will bind the spring at a certain lifts. Cam duration and valve lift will determine spring requirements. We have to run duel springs with high lift, long duration cams to get enough spring pressure but not coil bind at high lift.

why the f@#$ would you measure your stock springs! Of course I measured...the tomei springs after installed! You ever heard of a chilton manual or better yet a working on cars for dummies? You. Measure the springs hight after installed and use the hight specs that were given with the springs. If there isn't specs use the chilton manual! Wow. Measure stock springs ...sometimes I'm f@#$%&* amazed. What if your stick springs are out of spec?

By the way just straight dropped in springs were within spec first try! I hit 8500 rpms on a daily so have fun measuring your stock springs! Just don't mix up the stock valve spring shims, drop em in give a quick measure ( they will check out fine) and put it all together...crybaby solution.

no need to get all bent out of shape because you have an sr20 and your engine is mildly built - not blueprinted....

no biggie

spin it to 8500rpm daily do ya? with what ECU?

SR doesnt like anything above 7500 really, its quite simple.

P.S. How would the set height of the spring be any different when the groove in the valve stem for the keepers is at a set height and dictates this ? Ask yourself that simple question, or better yet refer to your Chiltons manual dooch-c*ck.

Ecu is enthalpy tuned then I wanted an extra fuel map for 110 octane so I got the greddy emu. Yes the height of a valve SHOULD be all the same if you have never done a valve job. If you do then it can through off valve hight like mine, that's when you measure valve hight and use shims accordingly. If you have never had a valve grind then they are direct drop in. Sorry for being snappy but it sounded like you came on here for help but already knew what you decided so everyone's opinion was wrong.
