I can't possibly stress this enough...DO NOT JOIN THE MARINE CORPS! There is nothing it has to offer that you can't get in the civilian world. Take it from me, typing this from Iraq. If you join now, you WILL deploy to Iraq within a year, and you WILL see some form of combat. And no, neither of those are cool.
Edit: I typed that first part on a computer missing about 8 critical letter keys, so I was brief. Now I'm on a good computer, so I can elaborate. First of all, why join the Marines? I spend some time on recruiter's assistance, and I usually heard: Discipline, physical fitness, to be among the best, college money, it's the hardest, etc etc. Let me dispel a few common misconceptions about those:-The Marine Corps will not make you disciplined. There are tons of undisciplined, lazy people in the Corps, just like everywhere else. If you go in that way, you'll come out that way.-If you want to be in great physical shape, don't count on the Corps to do it. Do it yourself. Oh, by the way, the Army actually runs a lot more than we do, little known fact there.-Not every Marine is some crazy commando, there are tons of non-combat job fields, and you'll probably end up in one if you join. And if you join a combat MOS (like me), you may end up guarding a gate in Iraq, totally unrelated to your job (again, like me). -True, our boot camp is the hardest of any service, and I guess that's a source of some pride...but it's only 3 months, and it's more annoying head games than anything else. -I suppose there is some college money incentive, but not a whole lot. If you join the air force or navy or something, you'll get the same benefits, with tons less bullsh*t.-The blues are nice, everyone loves the blues, but again, lots of BS to wear that uniform. -Again, the Corps has nothing to offer that you can't get for yourself in the civilian world. If I were you, I'd go to college, and forget about it. It's not worth doing deployment after deployment to sh*thole countries.
Now, it may sound like I hate the Marine Corps, which I don't. In fact, it's a source of pride that I'm an NCO in such a fine organization. I do, however, hate the unit I'm in, and that has tendency to make me to put a negative spin on the whole Corps. If I had to do it again, though, I probably would. That's my advice, take it or leave it.
