Well, I had the pleasure of breaking off TWO exhaust manifold studs in my head tonight. Literally twisted off with a 3/8 ratchet. Its clear I have had leaks there for awhile.

I have to pull the head to fix the studs, which is not that big of a deal. Problem is, I need either new head bolts or studs to put everything back together. I already have gaskets.

Who has the best price going on ARP head studs in the US? I need these things by friday.

Thanks alot guys! Hopefully the rest of this project goes halfway smoothly.

Evan

head studs <> exhaust manifold studs.

There are ARP head studs on ebay, and sometimes ARP exhaust mani studs

Courtesy Nissan has brand new OEM studs also for super cheap, search the threads here for the PNs.

Evan,

If you are talking about the exhaust manifold studs, I picked up an entire set (12) with nuts from Shay@ Nismoparts.com / Seattle-Tacoma Subaru-Nissan for .. $36? They were all brand new Nissan OEM parts. I believe you can get individuals.

Or you could just go to Lowes / Home Depot and snag a piece of all-thread and use that :-\ It is what Jon Powell suggested to me

Sorry guys, I know that post was vauge as hell. I made it real fast when I was on my way out.

I have to pull the head to replace the exhaust manifold studs because two broke, and I don't want to reuse the stock head bolts.

I am also going to replace all the exhaust studs, seems smart.

The studs literally twisted off with 10 ft/lbs of tq. The two that broke are on either end of the manifold. The front one has clearly been leaking, you can tell by the carbon on the head.

I considered attempting to fix them "in car" but after further thought I don't want to damage anything. Doing it in the car may bite me in the ***.. plus I really would have to buy a rt. angle drill to drill out the back stud. Figure thats a $150 drill or so for the makita..... rather spend that money on studs.

Thanks guys - Evan

PS.. surprisingly enough, I am not even pissed... not sure why LOL.

You can get ARP head studs pretty much anywhere. Just look up the part number for the RB25 (202-4301) and Google it. Compulsivehp.com has the set for $154+SH.

For the exhaust manifold studs, I would shy away from OEM Nissan. They are too weak to begin with and that's why everyone has at least one broken when they receive their motorset. I have had two break on me and of course one was on cyl. #6. One was already broken and the other I twisted off like it was butter. I lucked out and could get a vice grip on both studs though. Anyways, if you go to a good fastener shop, they will have something very similar to the stock stud (1mm shorter) for about $1 each. I believe ARP makes a fastener set for the exhaust studs, but don't have the part number on hand. Might just have to look it up or call them.

And make sure you order a new OEM head gasket for when you put it back together. While it is out, have the head milled for good measure

Thanks dude, is there anything specific I need to ask for at the "bolt shop" as far as parameters? Or just the strongest stuff they have...

Thanks for the head stud PN as well.

Look for stainless steel manifold studs.... They don't get as brittle as the crappy oem studs

Holy balls, the ARP kit is 122 bucks for exhaust manifold studs. I am going to find a fastener supplier like you guys mention and I see in the archives.

10Mx1.25 is the stud size, 50mm long, measure your length to confirm.

I will likely replace the intake side too, I do NOT want to do this again.

Evan

BTW, if I get these through a chain retailer or something I will be sure to let you guys know what I used.

You probably don't have to do the intake side since it isn't as harsh on that side of the motor.

Yeah, now that I look closer I notice they used bolts anyway. I am getting close to having the intake totally removed. Ill have the head off today for sure.

I still have an oil leak behind my timing cover somewhere, everything has an oily film on it. I am wondering if it isn't my valve covers.

Anyway.

Thanks Darius.

Thanks!

Well the head is totally off now and sitting on the floor. It was a freaking PITA to get the intake manifold off. Whatever, its done! To the machine shop tomorrow to get these removed.

The good news is that the cylinders still have crosshatch marks, they are in great shape.

Evan

EDIT; Head studs will be here on wed. I am looking into a local place for the exhaust studs. I can't swing the 130 for ARP's.
