My car shakes like crazy when starting off from a stop in 1st or Reverse. Seems like the clutch is grabbing on and off very quickly. Are there any documented cases of this happening to anyone?

I am also noticing that when I lightly depress the clutch pedal - maybe only about 1 inch, I can feel some vibrations which seem to be at a similar rate as when the car shudders with the clutch slip. When I press it any lower, I don't feel it at all.

Could it be an issue with the clutch dampener?

This is on a 1995 SE in case it matters.

Thanks in advance.

Factory original clutch? Mileage on the clutch? Is it an aftermarket? Particularly a puck-type?

I just bought the car and the clutch was replaced with OEM type clutch and the flywheel was resurfaced. It was done about 1 1/2 years ago.

Is it normal to feel light pulsation through the clutch pedal when it is depressed about 1 inch? Depressing it more eliminates the pulsation through the pedal.

Jeez. It could be many things, so I'll list a few and maybe it will help you hunt down the problem.First, no, it shouldn't shudder like that. Nor should you feel pulsation.

Oil on flywheel. Rear main leaking or back of valvecover leaking enough down to get into that area. Oil always causes shudder, though not pulsation.

Unsurfaced flywheel during clutch change. You said yours was, so this isn't for you. This wouldn't really cause all of your problems.

Worn pilot bushing. Should have been replaced with the clutch. This in conjunction with a worn input bearing on the transmission can exacerbate a shudder.

A worn throwout beaing might cause pedal pulsation.

Disc failure. Either the springs in the disc hub or the marcel spring. The friction material may have been cooked by someone abusing the clutch also.

Diaphragm spring/ pressure plate failure. I doubt it, but stranger things have happened.

Good luck, and let us know.

Ubernoober - thanks for the suggestions.

Probably not oil on the flywheel - the clutch does not slip at all during normal driving.

Are there any instructions here on how to change clutch/flywheel? I'd like to open it up to see for myself, but I've never done anything like it and I'm scared of the transmission crushing me when I pull it off the block.

I'm in NorCal sof if you're going to be up this way anytime in the near future, let me know!

If it is pucked, then it could be the clutch itself. alot of pucked clutches will have some slight shutter during stop and go driving.Im not sure about the pilot bearing being the cuase--that is surrounding the input shaft, right? I dont believethat would cause any shuddering or "hopping" more or les--it COULC be the TB--thats what i belive it being if not anything else.

Check your engine mounts. They could be really shot, and "rubberbanding" back and forth under that load.
