Internally – Nothing except for replacing the timing chain guides. Custom machining connecting rods, pistons, and camshafts is beyond my budget. The rods seem to be able the same size as SR rods, which I have seen handle 150hp each. I believe the pistons will be okay but are a little less forgiving to detonation than forged pistons – I’m willing to deal with that. Of course my compression ratio is stock, so I have to run a high octane fuel to make decent power. E85 is cheaper than 87 octane and just as good as the best VP Racing fuels for a turbo car, so I’m running that. An intercooler really isn’t needed, but I’m running one anyway.
Have you checked for other ignition-related problems that would cripple your engine to 5500 rpm? Perhaps the CAS was too far advanced? I believe that I have revved to 7200 without VVT engaged and didn’t have any problems – it just reduced power at higher rpm’s.
If your aftermarket computer was a chipped OEM VH45DE ECU, then the VVT solenoids should have still engaged, unless the tuner really screwed up the .bin file.
Your radiator is in the trunk too eh? Yeah, if I were to do it again I would try to fit it in front of the radiator support and not run an intercooler (assuming the car is alcohol-fueled). Fortunately, with a used Lincoln MKVIII fan the car has absolutely no cooling problems. Just be weary of exhaust fumes and radiator heat pouring in through the trunk and into the cabin. An upper radiator shroud to isolate the radiator to the exterior of the car is important.
