you can match revs without double clutching, just rev it up when you have the clutch in while you're moving the shifter. you get two things done at once then, instead of clutching, shifting to neutral, reving the motor, clutching, shifting into gear. seems pretty damn pointless to me. maybe double clutching was made up for people who can't walk and chew gum at the same time and then it was made famous by my personal favorite :rolleyes The Fast and the Furious.
i rev match in everyday driving. actually, when i'm a passenger and the driver does not rev match and just lets the clutch out slowly making the engine catch up to the driveshaft from idle rpm, it gets irritating because of the jerk forward.
i cannot see any instance when double clutching is a good method to shift. someone please enlighten me.

i started doing this when i first learned stick in order to match revs while braking. i didn't even know it was a racing technique until quite some time after i had been doing it on the street for months! hah.
