I've gotta make a decision whether I want to persue this car any further or just hold out and save my money for something newer. I've got rust on the A-Pillar that's getting worse, front frame rails are filled with foam, rear rails are filled with foam, and at that point I almost feel that my car is destined to rust to pieces.

Sure I could always buy a clean shell later on, but I could probably also use that a time an effort for a better platform.

Or I could just crazy on this car with no regard for it long-term future.

Who's running rusty S13's and not looking back? Who's got swapped rust buckets?

<threadjack>is there anything I can spray on the surface rust of my rocker panels to make it through the s***ty indiana winter? I would do something better but I will probably have to sell my 240 next fall (going home). there are several sprays I've found, any personal experience?</threadjack>

grind it with a grinder , and put fiberglass (kitty hair) over it kinda works like bondo, and when it dries grind/sand it smooth and paint it, its easy. Sprays are useless IMHO.

I remember about 6 years ago, before I bought my chuki, I met this really shifty dude in the middle of the night that tried to sell me a running piggy hatch. He came down on the price from $800 all the way to $400... I was on the fence about getting it until a good friend wisely talked me out of it. That thing needed way more work than I could put into it...

Lets put it this way: it was so bad it looked like the upholstery had rust and the chassis had AIDS...

Pretty bad advice.

Clean it up as best as you can and use One Steps' self etching zinc-chromate

here is your best advice

dont put a dime into it, no matter what it needs. drive this damn thing into the ground and use it for parts to swap over to a shell, or sell it as-is as a parts car or a beater, but dont lose any more money buy "fixing", its not gonna happen.

Here's the thing though. I've seen some really bad shells come back from the dead as monsters.

My car isn't that bad. If you didn't know where to look you wouldn't think it was rusty. However, as the car ages it will be increasingly more difficult to sell, so I might as well just plan on keeping it. If that's the case, I might as well fix engine issues as to prolong the life of the dying chassis. I can weld, but have no shop or welder, nor a DD to replace the 240 when I'm working on it, so I while I could fix the rust and rebox the rails, I wouldn't be able to do so until I've got a job and bigger storage/garage area.

Nice thing about coilovers and wheels is that they can be taken off and sold or swapped.

its all a personal preference

with my datsun the rust was unbearable.

with my 240 it has a sentimental value as my first car so i took it to a family friend and he busted out the rust i had starting.

now i just need to finish the engine bay rust.

bro the best thing i can tell you is to seriously consider buying a shell from the south for something rust free or with very little rust. no snow down here so most cars arent rusted. keep it in a garage untill your car is about to fall apart from the rust and then swap everything over to the shell. i know it might sound like a crazy idea but its not much to rent a trailer from uhaul.

It really comes just all down to you. Either if you wanna do all the work and keep the car then prepare to bust a**. otherwise you may need a cleaner shell. Shame that its a 2 tone

Take it to a frame shop. They can cut/patch/weld your frame.. Since the frame is the most important and if you dont want to get rid of the car..thats your best solution. Seeing that you live in PA you could always look for a roller in NJ seeing how in most of NJ they dont use road salt. My coupe came from jersey and it doesnt have a spec of rust on the frame. The only rust that it had was underneath the battery tray from battery acid dripping on it.

I had a 91 SE coupe that from the outside looked MINT..put it on the lift and there was base ball size holes in the frame and there was a giant rip through the metal wheel well on the driver side that actually raised the shock tower up 2 inches and I couldnt put a strut brace on it because the hood wouldnt close... Make along story short. I sold the car for $800 to a kid that was taking auto body tech class

Any ideas what a shop might charge to rebox the frame rails?
