that sounds pretty weird for a KA. sounds like it has A LOT of mileage.

do i hear valve tick or what?

Could be a lot of things. But sounds like it is in the top of the motor. Kinda hard to pin point with just an audio clip.

Everything could be very worn causing a lot of "slap" between parts. Or it could be just a little low on oil (or a lot low on oil). Mild exhaust leaks sound very similar to tapping as well.

Or maybe the motor is just crap..

Btw, motors without rocker arms do have a noisy valvetrain. That's why bikes sound like crap when they idle or are at low revs (besides the chain being loose)

Wow, that sounds awful to me, but I haven't listened closely to KAs, so I'm not sure.

It definitely sounds like there's some sort of valve click going on though... ick!

Damn guys, what's up with your engines? I'll record mine when we put on my exhaust, just to have a nice, smooth engine recording to balance out these...

Well mine doens;t sound like that when I put it in gear or after like 5 mins of idling. PLus yeh, thats with the hood open and the videocamera right over the valve cover. haha it sounds lieka truck at idle, maybe because it is a truck engine..? ;)

Yeah, I had to remind myself that it's a truck engine, otherwise I'd be asking how on earth you got it to even run...

Maybe the timing chain is a half link away from snapping

It needs a shim check/replacement. Mine sounds similar at 90K.Maybe replace some tming chain guides too.

i dont think thats chain rattle, those are loud as hell and very distinctive, i would say maby a shim like mentioned above. if you do a search in nissan online mechanic, NISTECH said how to use a feeler gauge to determine if you need shims and what size.

edit: as far as idle goes, in my car, the whole thing kinda shakes when it idles (750-800rpm)

If it were me I would just pull the valve cover and take a look.

Also, if the sound is coming from the front of the motor it could very likely be the timing chain rattling against the guides.

I don't know about the newer KA's but the s13 KA's had a reservice done on them. Whenever one shows up at a dealer and still has the top and side upper chain guides installed they remove them. Can't remember exactly why they are to be removed but they apparently serve little purpose.

I really doubt it is shims needing replaced. Rockerless valve trains have very little wear involved when taken care of. When I rebuilt my motor for turbo there was absolutely no measurable wear on the shims or cams at 102k. Not saying it's impossible. If you ran the motor on like 1 quart of oil it would really start to tear stuff apart.

BTW, have you checked the oil level yet? And is this a new noise or has it been there all along?

240Kid,

Your car shouldn't shake at idle. From my experience shaking is from really bad motor mounts or (more likely) you have ignition miss. Sounds to me like you are due up for some new plugs and/or plug wires. Maybe even cap and rotor.

A good way to test for ignition miss is to hold the revs at 2k at a stop light. If you can feel it miss, or audibly hear it miss, then you need some ignition tune-up.

sounds like valve tap. Mine sounds like a truck, but nowhere near that bad. I plan on yanking upper timing chain guide and replacing the lower one along with new timing chain, hopefully that fixes my problem

Pman_s13- i was just saying it, i absolutly need new plugs, mine are all fouled and **** ( and running rich probobly doesnt help anything) i got a few more sensors to cross check with the FSM, then im gona go ahead and replace the plugs. does your car not shake at all, like no vibration, etc...

sorry not trying to thread jack or anything, now on to what i really had to say:

injectors can get pretty loud sometimes, i know mine are and apparently some spark plugs can too.

IT is your valves sticking, sounds a lot like there are more than one. there might be a mix with the chain but i have 2 240s both had the chain problem, I know that sound and that doesnt sound like the chain.

Listening to it again, lol this sounds crazy but it sounds like your engine runs fine and there is a lawnmower in the background. J/K. but go with what I said above.

Valve sticking is a possibility. Do you have a boost/vacuum gauge? If so, the gauge needle should jump back and forth at idle, like not sit at a steady 20psi of vacuum or whatever.

Once again, sorry to thread jack.

240Kid, my motor vibrates a small amount at idle. But I wouldn't call it shaking by any measure. Like I could sit a cup full of water on the valve cover and probably not loose any.

You can pinpoint which cylinder is the worst too. Unplug each fuel injector one at a time. It is going to run worse when you do this. But the one (or all of them possibly) that doesn't make as much difference is the cylinder missing. Mine was #1.

Replacing valve seals are not going to fix a noise problem. Valve noise typically comes from the valve seating against the head too fast. And that would likely be caused by having too much valve lash. I'm not saying that's the problem though as I have no heard the clip. If I get a chance, I'll listen to it when I get home, but diagnosing sounds over the internet is not exactly the best way to try and figure things out.
