Don't worry, I'll be doing a lot of that. I've also got a server for my website with massive bandwidth that I may eventually use to host HL 24/7. But I've got a cable connection (average 3mbps!) on my home computer...I'll be online with HL2 a lot.

The comercial release. I'll be playing HL Source and HL2. Wasn't ever much of a CS fan, but I'll have to give CS Source a try.

I can't wait for hl2, but I HAVE to buy it, there is no "download it and get a cdkey" because of steam. During the installation you will be required to go online and register a steam account no matter what. No internet connection? Well you're just SOL. So expect to purchase HL2 if you want to play it.

Also 3mip upload or just download? Cable is known for it's download not upload which is what a server needs

No, no. I own webspace on a real web server. I host a web site off it. I've got 40GB bandwidth on the web server. That's both ways. up- and download. That's what I'll be hosting with once I have time to set it up. But in the meantime, I'll use my cable connection which should be enough.

I still have very fast upload...I put huge files on my web server, and that doesn't take as long as a sub 500 kbps connection should.

yah 500kbps should be fine for a 5-6 player match. But anything bigger then that i would imagine it would lag.

I have 40gb as well. Thats why im asking. How are you going to control the HL2 server when the webserver is not in your house?

I dunno...I just figured I'd work that out. I mean...there has to be a way...doesn't there?

I'll still be able to access and run whatever HL2 Server executable there is from my home computer. It's just like a network. Just upload and double click.

yah i guess. But it's not like you have a desktop. or a start up for that matter. You just have space on a hard drive and you can access it. Though you can show html live. So, i dunno i will do a search and let you know

Hmmm...now that I think of it....I'm not even sure if the thing is windows based. Hmmm...well once I've GOT HL2 I'll figure it out...or figure out it can't be figured out...

lol stop being confusing

Most servers are a.)unix based that load filesb.)java boxes that load files

So, it's possible i just don't know how to acess the excutible without downloading it.

Okayy...I don't know a lot about the server itself...so I'm being educated here. What I do know is HTML, Javascript, and that I am bored and have a website. I'm not all that knowlegable about the specifics of these types of things. I'm more of a hardware guy.

no no i meen the game server. What the game uses to host a game. Not the actual server itself. The server itself depends on the host. Could be windows, unix, or linux

OH! Okay. I am not confused. That is my mantra. Sometimes it works.

I am not confused...I am not confused...I am not confused...I am not confused...I am not confused...I am not confused...I am not confused...

EDIT: I am not really as dumb/ignorant as this makes me look. I hope.

im saying the web server could be unix, windows, or linux based. Yes, i know linux is a form of unix blah blah.

The actual server software that comes with HL2 could be java or unix based. NWN was java based while quake 3 was unix type based

like someone said earlier, you will be required to log onto steam and register your CDkey... just to play singleplayer, no point in downloading it
