I'm not actually going to race, so don't get the wrong idea. This is just out of pure wonderment, since the guy offered to race. Here's the setup:

Him: driving his friends '03 Eclipse GS (2.4l 4cyl), 5speed with intake... he's in the process of getting his SCCA license, so he probably knows what he's doing to a point.

Me: driving my Sentra SE 2.0 (SR20DE), 5speed with intake and short shifter... trained by two very good drivers (dad and brother).

Here's my analysis:His advantage is that he may have a little more driver training.

My advantage is VLSD.

Now the numbers (mine vs his): weight -2674lbs vs 2965lbsstock hp- 145 vs 147stock torque- 136 vs 158

I'm pretty sure that with a good launch I'd pull ahead (despite his torque, as I have the LSD), then it would be pretty much even from there. It would come down to who has a good run, no? Does 22lb/ft make up for 291lbs?

Compared to a lot of races, it would be, but I do have to say that despite the numbers, my Sentra has some kick, just ask my friend, who drives a Chevy Silverado (v6 though) and occasionally his brother's Tacoma V6 (remember, it weighs nothing, that thing's a friggin haus).

I'd like to see that race on a road course, in which case I think you'd OWN the foo.

Actually, I'd bet you'd pull him in the 1/4 too. Your power to weight ratio is better, and that's really what matters. Driver skill doesn't enter much in the 1/4 unless one of you really sucks.

Well JDMaster (if you see this at some point), I think my analysis earlier was pretty straight on, I was actually a bit more giving toward him than others seem to be. Those hp and torque numbers surprised me though. Mitsu cheats, extra .4 litre... The weight really surprised me, that thing is friggin' heavy! I thought it'd be in the 2800 range, and that the V6 was about 3000, I bet the V6 is probably closer to 3200-3300.

^That makes sense after you know that JDM brought it to me from a guy he knows.

eclipses are freakin' heavy. the V6 is really slow too. i mean, it makes 210hp and 140ftlbs i believe and it weighs like 3300-3400lbs. i like that K&N commercial where the guy says he does a 13.8 1/4mile when hes only got 250hp, 19"rims, and its a convert 3rd gen eclipse.

Remember to take your spare tire out and probably the back seat. Just slim your SE down a bit to help you out. You can always put that stuff back in.

Run a few bottles of 104+, air up those rear tires to 50 psi, and take a good healthy dump before you hit the track. :)

Hang on a sec, it seems logical, but I can't figure out why. Why would you air up the rears? I think their max is 44psi though... I keep the fronts at about 32psi, kinda on the low of normal range, correct? More grip in front plus... I guess it would be less friction in the rear if the tires are completely full would mean a faster FWD car, if I'm not mistaken?

Answer: you're both equally slow. Actually the SCCA license means little if all you're interested is a drag race. I think it would be pretty close, but assuming an equal start, you'd probably edge him out.

I think, of anywhere, launch would be the advantage of my car because of the LSD. I slam on the gas, LSD compensates. He slams on the gas, one wheel spins in a hideous display of smoke. More power is useless if you can't put it down.

I used the SCCA license as a reference that he's not Joe-Schmoe Honda Civic boy, he knows how to shift properly and probably knows something about powerband.

Name-You want to make this race real interesting? Let me race your SE against this guy. We will drag race 1/4 in reverse. Now that will make it interesting.

It is when my engine yells "Hey F***er!" and falls out. Plus, have you ever hit the rev limiter? It's an ugly, ugly thing... power just STOPS and the revs fall back to 6ishk from 6750...

Well, the rev falling part, yes... the yelling/falling out parts... haven't had that happen YET...

Well, if he knows how to properly launch/shift, then the value of LSD is not as dramatic, especially if you're talking underpowered cars. One car is not significantly better than the other, so in this kinda race, it would boil down to the better driver. And it sounds like you're both about equal in that department. This wouldn't be a slam dunk win, Ithink it would be a close race.

That's true. However, I think his first inclination upon launch would be to slam the gas, despite his training, it's not his car. In doing that, he would simply spin one wheel, albeit briefly, but long enough for me to get a little ahead. This is particularly true once he realized that my wheels (read, both) simply chirped on launch and then caught and I was a nose ahead going into my powerband. Once I hit 3000rpm not only would he notice the sudden kick of acceleration, but also the utter scream the SR20 belts out in the 3k-5500 range, which is mildly intimidating the first time you hear it, addictive afterwards.
