Generally white smoke means you're getting blow by in your pistons and oil is burning with your fuel. IE your piston rings are going bad. Does it have a sort of blue tint to it? Its a bad sign if theres smoking, but you aren't too bad off if you plan on rebuilding the engine with forged pistons and what not as you'll replace all the gaskets, seals and rings then anyways. I'd assume if you're doing that you're giving a full rebuild so it shouldn't be much of a concern for you.
You should wait on the port and polish until you rebuild the entire engine, no point in doing it now when you can do it while the engine is disassembled, it should cost you a chunk of chagne to have it done.
And smoke is always a bad thing. : )
