More than likely it's your rings... normally the valve seals don't go out on the KA's from what I've seen.

Do a compression test... then on the low cylinders (if any) put a spoonful of oil in the cylinder and retest. Post results.

check you plugs. Poor oil control in the combustion chambers may yield a oil fouled plug.

And Nismo Freak is right about the valve seals. I replaced a couple of mine and I doubt I needed to. The bucket has a very tight tolerance against the head. While expansion of the metals under heat may change it slightly, it was dry under the buckets. So it's not likely oil will even get to the seals.

Smell the smoke that comes out. Buring coolant will have a punget odor of coolant and be steamy in comparison to oil.

If i recall, white smoke means you are running lean, so check your MAS, clean it with throttle body cleaner something mild. and check your fuel injectors, make sure you are getting the amount of fuel you need in there. check 02 sensor as well, maybe it's time for replacement.

i checked my plugs and the tips were white. Also there was oil all around the threading. A local mechanic said it was my rings too. What is the ballpark figure for repairing the rings. Is it worth my hassle or should I go with an SR or a new KA?

If it's a BIG problem with your rings (check compression to find out) then it's not worth it to fix when you could just put a lower mileage KA int here for about 500 bucks or less.

hey man, if u be burning white smoke, then u are burning your oil, maybe it is too thin. use a thicker kinda fluid.

Oil can burn white. When my first turbo went south on me, it was billowing white smoke as oil was leaking into the turbine section.

ok, replacement ka's are not cheap. I don't know where you get these ideas from. My rebuilt longblock was $2100. I got a 2 year warranty, but that's still damn expensive and i didn't get any manifolds/sensors, or accessories.

for 500 bux, all i found was smoking engines and one's that didn't run. Try about 750-1000 for a low or high mileage for that matter, good running engine that isn't rebuilt.

Maybe it's just Iowa...but I can find a LOT of nice KA's for a good price here in Dallas. (I'm not talking out my *** either, I bought a rather nice one for 400 recently).
