its winter and i know some smoke [if it could be call that at all] can come from the exhaust; but theres a good bit of white smoke coming from my tailpipe even while riding. i heard it is just the engine coolant being burned, because an oil burn would make blue smoke. thank god its not that. please tell me how i can fix this; is it a gasket? or a leak in the coolant resourvoir? i do see stains from the orange coolant[or w./e color it is =]

please help me; you've guys been much help.

thank you guys.

If it is coming out of the tailpipe, it is being combusted. That can only mean your head gasket is toast. Is there a white sludge under the radiator cap? Running low on coolant? Can you smell a sweet smell coming from your tailpipe when running?

It could also be running very rich, and not coolant at all.

If you do it yourself it will cost you about 100 bucks give or take. i did mine a few months ago. It takes a while the first time but just take your time and keep track of everything and you'll be golden. It's not all that hard, especially if you have a helping hand.

When changing the headgasket it is wise to use different head studs as they have a tendancy to stretch. If the car is just used for daily driving just get a cheap oem gasket. If you get arp studs they will come with torque specs.

DONT GRIND THE HEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spend the 40 or 50 bucks, take it to the machine shop and have it milled. And then use a razor blade and scrape the block and use gasket remover too. Then get a flat blade ruler and feeler gauges and look for warpage. If the feel blade sits flat your good, if there are gaps then no good,if there are gaps measure the gaps with the feeler gauge.

But gaskets head bolts/studs/ timing chain should cost about $300 then read the FSM over and over and try it or get help from a friend who knows better.

OH AND DONT START IT ANYMORE...... you dont want to over heat it and cause warpage..

are you loosing coolant or oil? check your dipstick n see if its milky, check your oil to see if it has oil in it, do a compression test see if all cylinders r within 10 of eachother, is the smell sweet thats commin out? if so thats coolant, ie uve got a cracked or warped head, or ya need a headgasket!

how much does a compression test, getting a headgasket replaced[if you bought the headgasket already], and boring out the bores cost?

[separately] thanks =]

boring requires a total bottom end rebuild, you may not need. You can get a compression tester for under 40 bucks, and there is a write on on here. Its easy to do, but its not for you.

At this point checking compression is not your option. If you have a coolant in your exhaust, your going to fail the compression test because the air is going to push into the cooling system through the damaged head gasket.

Pull the head clean it with a razor blade and gasket cleaner, then take it to a machine shop and get it check and milled if needed (should be cheap my local machine shop charges 30 to check, 40 to mill).

If its good check the block, takes 10 minutes after you clean the deck. Then put her back together or have someone do it for you. Since the head is allready off and your buying the parts it should cut down the price. I would estimate installing the head will take 2 hours then you gotta put all the here and theres back on.

A head gasket, head bolts and a timing chain will run about 150, or you can upgrade to reusabe arp heads studs. Head bolts are torque to yield and cant be reused. But as long as you didn't over heat it it should be a cheap fix.
