probably condensation, or possibly coolant in your oil. mine does this too on cold starts, but goes away (condensation). if your constantly spewing white smoke thats really bad.....

I was about to say same, when your headgasket blows, you're coolant/oil starts to going in the chambers and causes the car to smoke smoke.

What kind white smoking is it smoking, is it bluish? Is it heavy? Does it smell sweet?

If its none of the above than its normal, usually when white smoke is heavy, it means its burning oil and if it smells sweet its burning coolant.

related, and not to clutter the posts...my car burns a bit of oil (blue smoke) after it idles for a while, when you touch the gas...what component is this? head gasket? valve seals? Figure i'll have to deal with it sooner or later...might as well be sooner while i've got money

Only places for oil to get into the chamber is by going around a piston ring or the valve seals. head gasket usually involves the coolant burning off since oil is thick, the passages are small, and if there was oil leaking in as fast as coolant you would run the system dry pretty quick, (almost 4 quarts of oil vs 1.5-2 gallons of coolant) and at that point you have alot more to fix than a gasket.
