Can anyone tell me what the white container (reservoir?) under the air intake on my 00 I30 is for. There is a black 90 degree elbow that connects from below the intake to the container next to the battery. The reason I ask is that the elbow was totally disconnected from both sides and I can't tell what does. The container is empty and I wasn't having any problems with it disconnected but I'm guessing it s/b connected.

If memory serves me well from my 2000 max It is your resonator for your airbox. It helps keep the car quite.

Am I better off with it on or off?

Are you using the factory intake or an aftermarket?

I'd go ahead and reconnect it. You will se no performance gains either way, but that was the way Nissan designed it. Might as well put it back as it was supposed to be until you get an intake mod.
