I want your opinions on boost controllers, manual or electronic. I'm not sure what will suit my needs better. My kit consists of:Turbonetics t3/t04e550cc DWf.m.i.c.JGS starter kitwalbro 255z32 mafJWT ecu~10 psi

stock motor for now. This will be a weekend drive car, the 1/4 mile track and spirited driving mainly.I am considering either a Hallman Pro with ultra lite gauge or AEM's electronic boost controlYour insite is appreciated.

Personally I use the AEM TruBoost. It's a gauge and controller in one, and it's pretty good. I like the features a lot.

It has two settings, A and B, for street/strip type setup. It also has a "Scramble" feature that when you hit a button it will give you a set extra amount of boost for a set time (up to 30 secs). I re-wired my button in my 'accel' cruise control button. Pretty slick if I don't say so myself, lol.

More than likely i will go with the AEM controller, it has some good features and like you said it's a gauge and controller in one.

I run a hallman pro in my evo, works great, stiff spring, holds 24.5psi spike and settles at 22. Easy to use, very easy.

I would like an electronic, but unless i'm gonna frequently be changing boost levels, I don't see the need

Do MBC do a good job at holding till the set boost level is reached or do they allow the WG to start opening early as WG's typically do (ie with an 8lb spring, the WG starts to open at 4psi and fully open by 8psi. If a MBC is set at 10psi, will it keep the WG fully closed till 10psi?)

I also have a hallman Pro... think it's the new rx.. idk I got it for a good price i'm happy.

ppctx, a ball and spring MBC(such as the hallman) will not allow the wastegate to open at all until the boost is past whatever it's set to. So if i set it to say 7psi on a 3psi spring, the wastegate won't open till 7psi. Needless to say this helps with spoolup. Might only be like 200 rpm, but it does make a slight difference.

Exellent! I've been eyeing the Hallman Pro RX so I think I know what the Fedex man will be bringing next week. Do you have tips or links to that good price?

So im just trying to figure this out for myself.. What makes a hallman MBC worth 70-80 dollars? How is it superior to a normal 10 dollar ball and spring MBC? Anyone ever taken it apart and seen anything different than a normal MBC?

You pay for the name. I would think the quality of Hallman is far superior to a $10 controller. It's a little bit pricey but for the quality and durability it's a sound buy.

IIRC, the hallman uses a ceramic ball(better response,non-sticking), and it doesn't leak like "cheaper" mbcs(I'm not sure about this though).

if it's worth it is up to you

I would go with a mbc. With a electronic one its easy to turn the boost up after you lose and you are more likely to blow it up. With a manual you have to get under the hood and most people are too lazy to do that. It kind of keeps you in check of making a bad decision in the spirit of the moment.

Very true, i'm happy with my decision of a manual controller.

honestly, i run a hallman but i have ran a joe p mbc and they both do a great job. i didn't pay the "name tax" for the hallman but if your going the mbc route, either one of those brands will get the job done reliably. the joe p mbc is cheaper by 30 bux i think.
