I have a 2009 Nissan Rogue SL AWD and whenever I let the rogue de-accelerate by itself (dont push the brakes, just let it coast) it makes a whistling type of noise. I believe it has been doing this since day 1. It seems to be coming from the engine...is this a normal engine noise on all rogues when ever you lift your foot off the accelerator and let the vehicle coast???
-when i press the accelerator it goes away
I can hear it more on the quieter side streets when coasting at around 45km/h
And its not from any wind or anything like that.
Also don't think its the CVT rattle

Thanks

its not your engine, its the CVT, I just went to the dealership for this and a new CVT is on order.

Hi harryg,

I definitely do not have this noise, you should not hear any loud abonormal noises when coasting as you described, I would definitely recommend making a service appointment to have the issue diagnosed and repaired. I have not heard of anyone other than TonyN reporting this problem, and the only guess I have that could cause a whistling noise could be a vacuum leak, but this would also result in performance issues depending on how significant the leak. Since this is easy to replicate I'm sure Nissan will diagnose it quickly and have an answer for you.

Please post back here after you diagnose the problem and let us know the outcome, thank you!

I get this same sound when I slow down with the brake, almost sounds like a cold air kit installed. Might be the trans.

i've also been experiencing this problem. Rogue SL AWD. i took it into the dealer, and after running diagnostics, they said it's normal operating noise.. and when i asked to test drive a newer rogue to see if it still made the noise, the mechanic at the dealership got pissed off, started yelling a bit. eventually the service center manager came along with me on a drive in my car to check out the noise. apparently it's normal operating sounds and he admitted he could hear the sound too. apparently the infiniti's with CVT don't make this noise (in other words, nissan cheaped out on building a good CVT transmission). They say to come back if i experience any problems, but my problem is it making a really LOUD sound when i decelerate. im really hoping there is a major problem with the sound and the CVT so the idiots at nissan can admit the problem and fix it or replace.. i wasnt happy with nissans service whatsoever. im interested in hearing what other dealerships did for you guys.

Infiniti does not sell a CVT in any of their cars for the North American market. In Japan, they have the Extroid CVT, but that is a completely different transmission and not sold here.

The CVT does make different noises than a conventional automatic. Some of these may seem 'unnatural' but it does not indicate there is a problem with the CVT itself. I have heard some whistling/whirring noises on deceleration, but none that have ever worried about.

I now have 65,000 (108,000km) trouble free miles on my CVT. The rattle issue aside, I have not had a single problem.

All Nissan CVT's also have a 120,000mi/10yr warranty:
