well my car runs fine in every gear, and even in 5th but right when i switch to it, it starts whistling... then after i speed up a little more the whistle disappears. does anyone know whats causing this? and is it harmful to the engine?

does the noise present it self right after you let the throttle back to maintain a steady speed then go away when you only very slightly give it some gas then return when you return to a steady speed? and it is very predomenant at speeds between 50 and 60 mph. If so I would lean more toward the rear diff as the source of the noise rather then the trans. If it were the gears in the trans for fifth gear It wouldnt matter what you were doing as far as speed it would be constant in that gear.

yeah you pretty much hit it on the right note. it whistles right when i shift to 5th then goes away after a steady speed, and does it at around 50-60mph. thanks for your help!
