Hi guys, I have a 1993 240 SX Coupe. Here are my problems: At exactly 2900 RpM my engine/car/don't-really-know-what makes a whisking sound (kinda like dragging a metal rake over concrete). It only makes this sound for the 1/2 second before I shift to the next gear and before I hit 3000 when in fifth. It will make the noise continuosly if I keep it at 2900.

Also, another more prolonged whisking/sqeaky-grating is coming from both of my rear brakes. It stared a few months ago with my passenger side and now both sides are doing it. My brakes are not compromised, it's just a REALLY annoying noise and it embarasses the crap out of me. The sound comes at random times while I am driving and sometimes when I am in reverse.

As you may have guessed, I am a chick, but I would like to fix this by myself and with the help of my boyfriend, because I am broke. If you know how to help please do. I have the book for my car, but layman's terms are greatly appreciated.

Sorry, I forgot to add that it has ~130k and I had the head gasket replaced early in 2002. Also my car leaks oil like a sieve, but I keep it full. Thanks.

the noise from the brakes is most likely the indicators telling you your about to use up the rest of your brake pads. the other noise may just be an exhaust heat shield vibrating with the harmonics of the engine. if it does it when your in neutral and you rev it to 2900 rpms . i would almost put money on it. to locate it have your guy push on the different shields for the exhaust with a screw driver or something while you rev it and recreate the noise.

My boyfriend checked the break pads and they are still good. Could it be anything else?

does this only occur when braking or does it do it all the time. if only when braking is it possible your rotors and pads are glazed? if it happens when your just drivin down the road i would take a close look at the brake hardware the pads slide in.look to see if the retaining tabs that keep the hardware centered are not broke off allowing the hardware to slide up against the rotor.
