We have developed a "whirring rattle" in our 91 Q45. The car has 125,000 miles and is driven very little now. Chains, chain guides and tensioners have all been changed. All routine maintentance is up to date. Our sound seems to come from the front center of the engine. Car runs fine, it occurs in all gears from park to reverse. It doesn't overheat and the outside temperature is not a factor. It's onset occurs within 1 to 2 minutes after start up. Sound seems to vary with engine rpm's, but is just as prominant at idle. We were thinking, water pump? Fan? Can you offer any help?? -91Q4U-P.S.Thanks to the forum, we were able to solve our "brake light delima" by installing the correct bulbs and a new tail light sensor we purchased from the dudes in Scottsdale. Excellent customer service!

Could be any of the accessories. Loose belt, bad idler, bad fan, alt, etc. Remove one belt at a time and see if it solves the problem, then narrow it down from there. Inspect and feel each pulley. The fan/water pump belt is critical though. The car will overheat VERY quickly without it.

You know, if every owner described their issue with as much detail as this one did, we'd have a MUCH higher "fix" ratio!

Welcome to NICO, 91Q4U!!!

p.s. Where are you located?

Be sure and release the belt tension when checking the pulleys, water pump, alternator, power steering pump and A/c compressor. Also check the fan and fan clutch carefully. From 'whirring rattle' I suspect one of the idler pulley bearings has gone, but it could be the alternator or water pump also.( I had a wp on a MBZ 600SL (V-12) that started making weird noise, turned out to be worn bearings allowing back of impeller to rub against block.) no leak ever. A 'mechanics stethoscope' is a great diagnostic tool everyone should have. Touch it on a part and listen. Bad bearings are real obvious that way.

Hey I was wondering if you got the problem solved... I am having this same problem in my KA. I know for sure it's not the water pump or P.S. pump. It sound like it's coming from front and center of the engine... like he said. We have the same problem... 91Q, did you ever find the problem???

I took off my valve cover yesterday to look and see if I could see anything broken, nothing was broken. It seems to get louder the longer the car is on, or the warmer the car gets.

Sounds like the bearings are going out in your belt tensioner pulley.Check out the thread we wrote"When good fan belts go bad" from 8/8/2004 (last year)and all the replies. Too long to quote all you need here..sorry.. Though definately worth the search to look it up!

The crank pulley? It's bolted to the crank--no ball bearing at all. Is the pulley falling apart?

I dont think so... I jacked the car up and got underneath it... I listened and i'm pretty sure the noise is coming from the crank pulley... I tried to spray some WD40 up in there but the noise didn't go away. I don't see any wobbling or anything like that. It may need to be removed and lubricated... I will look closer tomorrow. By the way, I don't have an infinity... i have the 240 KA twin cam engine. It' sjust loud and annoying and a little embarassing. :-P I might go fire it up and look closer..

Not as embarassing as my Q. Whenever I accelerate/turn it makes an earshattering SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH noise.

the screech is probably a loose belt. I got underneath it again and tried to get as close as i could to the block and listen... it sounds like it's coming from inside... can a timing chain and/or guides make this kind of noise? I need to get my camera and record it so everyone can hear what i'm hearing. If you have ever pushed a mop bucket across the floor and it had bad wheels... .that's what it sounds like... but spinning really fast, not as high pitched though...

Post up on Nissan Online Mechanic. It is a common problem for the older models to make a lot of noise, but I'm not sure if the KA is one of them. I thought it was with the upper chain guide though. The Nissan guys will know. It better not be a journal bearing--that would be terminal.

Hey Q, did the link work? I made a movie of the sound and was wondering if it was anything like your problem/sound?
