whinning noise in reverse

Does anyone kno what causes the whinning type noise when in the reverse gear? i gets on my nerves alot and was wondering if i could make it stop some how.

auto or 5spd? On standards I heard it was to do with the reverse gear teeth are straight cut as opposed to angle cut, but maybe this is BS. All cars tend to sound funny in reverse, if its just the sound that really bothers you, how much backing up do you do in a day. I maybe drive in reverse 10 feet.

5 spd standard, i dont do alot of driving in reverse but i was just wondering if anyone doesnt have that noise. doesnt really matter tho.

every car Ive had would whine in reverse. At first I thought it was FWD thing, but my 240 does it too. I think thats normal.

It's not a problem, most (if not all) cars do it.

i was only asking because i havent driven too many cars except automatics and my dad's bmw 330 which doesnt make the noise, no big deal tho
