have a CA18DET, all stock except everything listed below. I've been driving it the past month and its been running/driving/boosting fine. Started it up today, took my friend home, no problems.. a few minutes later, i noticed that when i would start hitting boost, there was this "whining noise", like a supercharger? oil level, pressure, and temperature are all good. turning the elec. fan on/off didn't help, and it does it primarely in gear, and a little bit at around 6-7.5k in neutral.

any ideas? maybe the alternator or alt belt? im puzzled as it just started out of nowhere. i may also mention that i have a stock water pump and alternator. i recently tightened the alternator belt as well..

Sounded at first like a bad fan clutch, but you said you have electric fans. I'd loosen up your belts and check your pulleys to see if they spin freely. Also, could be that you overtighten your belts too.

i had tightened the belts about a week ago and it drove fine, but ill check it.

it doesn't sound like the turbo to me, since the noise isn't as loud/consistant as when in gear.

took it for a test drive and it the noise is definatley boost dependant, but sometimes doesn't present until higher in the RPMs. maybe turbo-manifold gasket blown out?

check shaft play on turbo and it is minimal. no boost/vac leaks. there MIGHT be one on the elbow coming off the turbo but i have no way of checking right now. when i get home tonight i'll probably throw some permatex on it..

Make sure to check all your boots (rubber hoses) that go to your cooler too. The will make a whisting - whining sound if they leak or get a small hole.

My LS6 sounds like it got a damn procharger on it. Its a bearing going bad on my tensioner. It may be a pulley bearing or tensioner for you as well

thats another thing i was thinking. but my sound is boost dependant. as in when it flutters from the compressor surge, the sound does it as well. ( i think)

well fixed a boost leak and it stopped making the noise. i'll report back in a few days to confirm diagnosis. Thanks.
