I have a 1990 hatchback, 5spd, with 190k kilometres on it... when I first got the car I noticed a slight whirring, almost a whine, when you put the car into gear and drive off.. as the RPM's increased, the whine got more high pitched.. it was barely audible.. but I also noticed it when the car was sitting in neutral with the clutch engaged.. as soon as you pushed in the clutch pedal, the noise would stop... so tonight I was accelerating in third, with the music blasting.. and I hear a loud whine coming from under the car... I turn down my music, and its the same noise as before, just much louder...

anybody got any idea whats wrong?

Sorry about the double post, I posted the original in general chat by accident

Start the engine and let it idle with the radio and everything else off, no noises. With the clutch pedal up listen for the noise if it goes away when you push the pedal in and comes back when you release the pedal than you have a bad bearing or chipped gear in the trans. Chances are it's the rear counter shaft bearing coming apart. It gets louder driving because of the loud on the bearing. If the release bearing or throw out bearing is bad it will be noisey with the clutch pedal pushed in.

The noise goes away as soon as I push in the clutch pedal.. and I dunno if its a chipped tooth on a gear, cause it makes that noise in every gear... even in neutral... but I dunno... I am assuming by what you said, if the noise is only there when the I take my foot off the clutch, it is probably the rear counter shaft bearing?

how hard is it to replace it?

Thanks for your help aswell

Does the noise happen in all gears or just some? If it's the first 3 lower gears, then it could be the input shaft or related bearings...in 4th & 5th it could be the output shaft.

But, given that it happens when you release the clutch in N and not moving, I'm leaning towards the input shaft or related bearings.

Had a similar noise on a previous vehicle (Mazda P/U truck) and my mechanic said that the i/p shaft bearing was toast....

YMMV........John

Someone must have got lazy and didn't replace the bearing when clutch was replaced. I'm assuming thats not stock clutch.
