yeah, that's pretty much it, it only whines in reverse, in drive is just fine no noises whatsoever. it wasn't making the sound 2 days ago, it just started today. has anyone encountered something like this before?

i can't tell when i am on the car where the sound comes from. will have my friend reverse it for me and try to pinpoint the sound. in the mean time tho, has anyone ever encountered this? i tried looking on tt, even here, and i got no results.

Normally the cars make a whining sound when going in reverse. Its the way the gears are cut. If it just started like you said recently, it could be low on fluid or fluid needs to be changed.

Is yours a 5 speed or auto? How fast were you going when you were in reverse?

Yeah most cars whine in reverse, I wouldn't really worry about it (but do check the fluid like nissanfreak said). Now if it was making grinding/metallic noises THEN I would worry.

Lets rule some things out.

While in reverse does the noise change when you pull the e brake up so its catching? While braking in reverse?

Does it only make while your moving?

Does it make the noise lights on or off?

Does the pitch get louder the faster you go? Quiet down?

Honestly, it almost sounds like the brakes are grabbing a little. That is not a bearing sound or gear whine, at least it doesn;t sound that way to me.

about your last point, my rear brake pads need replacing, they are making sounds when going foward.

as for the rest:

no the noise does not change if the ebrake is pulled nor while braking.

yes, only while i move.

i don't know, i will try that tomorrow

seems to be the same all the way, will test tomorrow too

I bet your noise is your rear brakes. Its probably down at the warning track, which is what i making your noise forward as well. Did the noise start at about the same time?
