Hi. I just bought an 02 I35 with 150k on it. Other than small things that need repair I have not figured out what the whining noise is when I get the car rolling on the freeway. I can rev the engine and it is quiet. I put it in gear and as I accelerate I can hear a noise that seems to be an inboard axle bearing but I have no repair manual nor could I find one online.
This noise sounds like a turbo with a bad bearing. If am driving city at 25 I can barely hear it. It doesnt seem to get louder as I turn one direction or the other. The trans shifts perfect and has nice pink oil in it. I have an appointment at the dealer to check on the overall condition as I really dont know what this car is supposed to sound like. The only thing I am sure is wrong is the wipers dont auto park when you turn them off.

Any ideas on the noise?
Thanks

I have had a bad cv axle that didn't click or have the classic symptoms
The bad one seemed to be causing a transmission slip on high speeds
and it wasn't always consistent with the problem

Interesting. I just dropped the car off at the dealer to see if they can figure it out. Hopefully an axle or something other than the trans. Runs and shifts fine. Sounds like a blower at freeway speed.
Thanks for the reply,

Not so good news. Dealer says the trans is going and it is 4500 to replace. They noticed the weeping valve covers and want 1400 to replace the vc's. I used a shop in Livermore for 20 years says he will do the tans for 2800 including factory valve body.
Im guessing I can do the new covers. Do I need more than just the valve covers? Like other gaskets?

did they pull the transmission pan and look at the trans oil or for metal in the pan?

Trans shop called and said he thinks the whining is an inboard bearing in the final drive. My thoughts in the first place. He is going to take it apart and if the fluid looks good just fix the final drive end. He said that would run about $1000.
I like to stay away from dealers but thought they might recognize a common noise. I relly didnt think they would change an engine because it was low on oil.
