Sorry, but I won't be much help here. I figured my problem to be my power steering pump because when I checked it about a month ago, it was empty! and to top that, I was driving with it empty for probably a month or two!

I used that good thick Lucas power steering fluid, and it helped only a little bit. I think my problem will only be solved if I get a new power steering pump.

I posted on here asking someone for directions on the replacement procedure, but no one has replied yet.

I hope you solve your problem soon as well.

Thanks,

Geoff.

I'm not having any alternator problems now but that probably didn't happen until 4 years after the timing belt change where I think I damaged the main pulley. I was at a friends garage when I realized the main pulley would not come off. I did not have a puller so I pried it off with two screw drivers (over the course of a several hours). I'm much more careful about having the right tools or other transportation these days.

It was essentially a steering wheel puller that I used last time. The two or three jaw type would also stress the flexible section of the main pulley. The only reason I figured this out is that after I pulled the belts off (figuring I had a bad alternator) I grabbed the main pulley to help position myself under the car. The pulley moved on me which really caught my attention (after all the grief I had taking it off to change the timing belt). I was then able to watch the center of the pulley stay still while I rotated the outside.

Noting my skills at procrastination (4 years to let a problem work itself out) I wanted to find out if anyone else had ran into the same problem before I tear into this again. If I felt certain this was the problem I would order the part ahead of time but I guess the problem won't be clear until I pull the belts off (I hate doing things twice). The tone and level of squealing I now have makes me think I likely have the same problem. If I buy a new one I will just need to make sure no other pulleys are binding up. Based on the last time the car will probaby work for several more years. But I think my neighbors might lynch me if I try going that long.

If the crankshaft pulley is slipping it won't be driving the PS, alternator, AC and water pump very well.

I once had the dealership replace a screeching bearing, but I don't recall specifically which one and when doing my timing belt change I was surprised to discover that the bearings in the CPS were rough and dry, but that was after the screeching bearing had been replaced.

After a few weeks at least one of my new belts began to screech and I just tightened them all, as originally I probably didn't tighten any of them enough, trying to avoid tightening them too much.

Try disconnecting the three belts in sequence one at time in order to determine which one is screeching or driving a screeching bearing?

GerryO,Thanks for the info, I will probably try that with the belts this weekend.

yodawill2000,I doubt the puller you used was any problem if it came off easy. The screwdriver method would ahve been far worse.

Yeah .But now that I know its a two part pully if I do it again I will pull from the inside. The jaws can be swapped around to pull from either outside or inside.
