So i have a 1996 Pathy, 5 speed, and i was wondering if anyone knew what on earth this noise was?

Now i think its the flywheel bearing (if we have that, i dont know a whole lot about the nitty gritty details about cars)

Now the only reason i think its a flywheel bearing is my experience with top gear

what Jeremy's car, (the green one) and my car sound very similar.

Here is my video

Its goes away about 5-10 minutes after driving, and only happens when its cold, should be something i should be concerned with?

(sorry for the bad quality, its a lot harder than i thought to clutch and film at the same time :) )

Im going to have the valve cover gaskets and timing belt done here soon, should i have this (whatever it is) done as well?

Thanks

-Kyle

I embedded your videos for you.

Have you ever changed the transmission fluid? How many miles do you have on your Pathfinder?

Sweet, how did you do that?

I have had the car since Sep/09 and it had about 105K on the clock, now had a little over a 122K ish.

Yes i had the transmission flushed about 5K ago, i think that sounds right?

How do you flush a manual transmission? One drains & fills it via the drain and fill plugs. I assume you had a shop perform the work?

Code: Select all

Honestly i have NO idea how they did or what they did, i don't like messing around with transmissions, so forgive my ignorance. :frown:

But i took it to a oil can Henry's and they did something called a vacuum flush or something along those lines where i guess they just suck out the old fluid? but the fat dumba** underneath stripped my drain bolt i guess? i really don't know what happened, but i was under the impression that fluid was removed in some manor and replaced with something else.

Sorry for lack of info.

They probably used some sort of vacuum fluid extractor to evacuate the fluid via the transmission fill plug. If they stripped your drain or fill plugs, have them remove it and install a new OEM one on their dime. Also find out what fluid they put in, maybe some moron filled it with incorrect fluid.

Well i did the flush months ago, and its only just now becoming an issue. But moron theory is definitely a possibility, another dillweed from the same place put close to 5 quarts of oil in and it was only after i check everything a week later that i noticed it, so im never going back there. ANNNDDD ever since i went there, there has been an slow oil leak, but i think its from the valve covers, so i thinks it an isolated incident.

but yeah, do you think that if i went there and demanded a new drain plug, they will do it?

Thanks for all the help.

It's worth a try. Bring any service records from your visit there. If they do replace the drain plug (and thus the fluid), watch them like a hawk. Maybe insist that they use OEM manual transmission fluid while they're at it. If you find the service records and it lists what fluid they used, post it here.

If the oil leak persists, try tightening the valve cover screws; often they loosen slightly and a simple tightening with a screwdriver will fix the weeping.

Things like this is why I try to do all my own work when possible. You should consider doing the same if you're at all mechanically inclined. :)

Alright, ill see if i can find that receipt, (didn't care much back then) hopefully they can look it up.

hmm ill give that a shot, any ideas of checking to make sure it work, i was thinking about doing the change and then using like a gunk gel decreasing and then see if i can trace the source of the leak...

Yeah, degreasing thoroughly then monitoring the area for leaks should work just fine.

Any suggestions on how to access all the bolts on the covers? or is it just simply remove as much stuff as possible until the bolt are accessible?

And does torque matter? i have a full PDF of the entire Service Manual, but does it really matter?

Thanks for the help man.

But if ANYONE has had a similar issue, PLEASE feel free to post.

I think as long as you don't torque it to 80,000 hojillion foot pounds, you're OK. But if you've got the proper tools and enough clearance to torque the bolts properly, go for it. I haven't had any experience with the VG33E engine in your Pathfinder and I'm not sure how accessible they are, sorry. If I recall correctly, they can be tightened with a Phillips head screwdriver.

Okay, sounds good, i have a good friend who be helping me with alot of the work, so ill see what he wants to do.

Do you know or have any experience with a engine decreasing agent? the only reason i threw out gunk brand is because i came across a YouTube vid demonstrating it. seemed pretty easy to use.

Thanks again

I have a can of Gunk engine degreaser gel in my garage, but I haven't used it yet. Just follow the instructions on the can and you'll be fine. Perhaps cover the alternator and battery with something just to be on the safe side.
