i'll fire up my sr motor from a cold start........and almost as if it was timed, i'll get a loud whining sound that sounds like when your power steering is out of fluid. as the engine warms up.....the noise subsides.......and as soon as the temp. gauge is at the center on my gauge cluster......the noise is completely gone. now, whenever i rev up the motor you can here the noise somewhat.......so anyone know possibly what it could be?? timing is off.....water pump.....?.....i've had both responses, but i'm totally clueless. any help would be appreciated, thanks

Check the tensions of your belts. Could be something simple like that.

if its simlar to a soft hum and you have an upgraded fuel pump its probally the fuel pump priming.

edit: nvm, just noticed it was after ingition. just check your belts and make sure they arn't cracked and are tight.

i do have a walbro 255 fuel pump running w/a 300zx fuel filter.......does this sound like the reasoning behind it.....? like i said, it sounds like your power steering when it needs fluid. thanks for any input!

well, when i turn the accessory ignition on (cabin lights and windows etc. right before ignition) i can hear my fuel pump turning on. this sound is normal. but since you stated its after ignition, i really am not sure.

i would recommend you tighting the belts a little more is the belts are soft to pull on. and also i would recommend you changing your power steering fluid to nissan. you can get it at nissan dealership. you can also do a test to see if its just your power steering.

i forgot to mention that my power steering is disconnected....i had the 4ws hicas on my car b4 my engine swap and my sr doesn't incorporate the 4ws.......so maybe that will lead somewhere LOL......

power steering disconected like, the lines are all off, or the belt is off the p/s pump, or there is no pump all-together? id take a little belt dressing, or even wd40 and spray the inside of the belts to rule them out. if the belt is dry and cracked it will make a humming/whining noise, the wd 40 will lube it enough to stop the noise momentarily. i disregarded that noise for a month or so, finally sprayed them to check, then broke down and changed them and no more noise.

well here's some more symptoms.......after its warm the sound only shows when i rev.......and after driving for a while i'll come to a stop sign and all the lights inside the cabin dim a little, and the rpms drop a couple hundred, but then return to normal. could the sound be my alternator on the way out????

my car was doing that too(whining from belts, rpm drops at stops). i replaced both belts, and tightened my BOV(not recirculated). still get a small drop when i come to a stop but way better. ie. it doesn't stall anymore. also no more whine from the belts.

Is it a sqeal like from the belts or more like a low whine. I have the same problem on my 93'. Is your car droped? The reason I ask you this is bc my car is slammed and my powersteering makes a whine as if it was struggling or low of fluid. When im at a light my revs drop to about 500-600rpm them go back to normal and the symptoms are the same as yours (when engine warms up whine decreases and at revs makes the noise) My best guess would be something that has to do with the ps.

dose it make the whining noise when you turn the steering wheel?

press in your clutch see if the sound goes away, i have a feeling its probably the transmission, my transmission and a few friends transmission does it all the time, nothing to worry about if thats the case, i have a brand new clutch and TO bearing and it didnt change a thing

Want the best way to check your belts? Start it up cold one morning wiht the bonnet open and trickle some water onto each belt... If it is a belt at all, the moment you drop a little water onto it, the squeal should stop momentarily then start back up immediately after all the water dries up. Don't know how it works but it works pretty well for finding which belt is making the whine even though they all feel tight.Hope that helps at all
