...I want to be, too.

I've always dreamed of driving across the country, and as the wife is requesting time off from December 19th to January 6th to visit family back in China, I detect an opportunity. My workplace will be shutting down from the 24th to at least the 1st (probably the 2nd, too), so I'll have 9-10 days to get this in. I'd be driving from Connecticut to... wherever... and back again. I keep checking for events in the regional forums, but we're not a great group of planners, are we? I may or may not be solo on this trip, and I may or may not prefer it that way. So, NICO, any advice?

So, who do I visit?
What do I see?
What route should I take?
How much should I save?
Are there opportunities for caravans along the way? Interest?
Is there anything really worth seeing in California, anyways?

True, that's a good point. Maybe if I aim southward first and make friends with the bible belt before heading west, it'd be a more reliable journey.

i drive back and forth to missoula from where i live in idaho on i90, its a pretty drive but, the only way you can really make it in the winter most other passes get shut down or are dangerously slick, not any fun then

I was thinking that, in order to cover the distance in the time I'm allowing, I'd want to stick to main highways.

Sounds like a good time. If you end up sticking to the east coast you can hit up some florida sun skipping out on a northeast winter. I enjoyed the drive down in the areas of the smokies for the mountainous terrain, and charlestown south carolina for its rich history, and "low country" style of food.

Plus if you head down i-95 theres always the must stop tourist trap known as South of the Border.

Oklahoma roads are the worst due to the hot summer and the freeways buckling. It was a pita to navigate, had to slow down to keep from going airborne, then the freeway would get better for a couple of miles then get bad again.

VQ, that's a good thought, too. Might have a better time if I just zip down 95. I have a friend in CT from Florida with family there, and he might be interested in going down and being my tour guide. :D

Go see the world's largest ketchup bottle in Collinsville IL.

Pick a target and wander around the continent. My next destination is Arizona, but after that (when spring comes around) I want to go north as far as I can into Canada.

95 is a nice road, just plan to be in the DC area at a good time, either way early or mid-day. when we went down 395 looked like a ghost town, because we were there at 4am, 4-5 lanes of open road. :shifter:

Arizona was my first thought; I wanted to surprise Greg with girl scout cookies. Also, I have tons of family there.

SO MANY PLACES
