was wondering if there was any info about wear and tear on a cvt if you consistantly change from manual mode to sports drive mode. Does anyone have anything on it..?will it kill the transmission, is it perfectly fine?

thanks

Ribby,

Despite and concerns the general audience here about the CVT in general, I have to beleive that the fact that the feature is a deliberate feature poroduced by the vendor that it has an indifferent effect on the transmission itself.

Manula or auto, it shouldn't make a different. Likely the way you drive, (i.e. lead foot vs. granny foot) has more effect on the longevity of the transmission.

Two cents,-- Wind

I was thinking about this too, like when your cruising in a higher gear and feel like going faster, you drop down a gear or two.... will doing this often be bad for the CVT?

Since there is not gears involved, only belt and pulley, I don't think you will do any damage.

thanks, appreciate the 2 cents and thoughts. when i am driving i use the normal drive mode. but going from a manual to the cvt, i miss having the stopping and accelerating of a manual. so ive tried this, when driving on the highway going about 60-70 and need to slow down quick using less brakes, i normally slap it into manual mode and downshift 2 gears, this brought it to 3rd sometimes 4th gear, and when accelerating it feels more like a manual with power in hand. when ive slowed down on a highway in normal drive mode, when you go to punch it again it does have that little bit of lag time that before it punches in. by slappin it to manual mode to slow, when you accelerate there is no lag, just go, and i usually shift at about 6500-7000 rpm, just before redline, i havnt allowed it to automatically shift on its own.anyone try this...? looking for that power in hand with no lag and not damaging the engine. i have about 1400 miles on my car so i just recently starting taking OFF.. lol

Yea I drive the CVT like a manual. I don't ever take it out of manual mode unless i'm in cruise control.

forgive my ignorance, but downshifting to slow down ...... wouldn't that raise the RPM and cause the engine to run harder so you can slow down instead of using brakes?

sorry, i live in jersey and people drive like crap... i was more or less talking about when driving and due to traffic or what not u would slap it into manual mode to slow down quickly yes, and when you wanted to speed up, you speed up much more faster than leaving the car in drive mode... and i guess the big question is, wheather or not that is bad for the cvt transmission...

Interesting article. It reminds me of a snowmobile motor/transmission but there's two centrifugal pulleys instead of one.

Hey Blake, just wondering... if you know that you're going on a highway, do use the cvt in manual mode down the on ramp untill you're to your desired speed then throw it into auto mode or do you put it into auto mode before you're on the on ramp?

Here is a link to a page that says it is a mock up of a Nissan CVT transmission. No belt and pully involved. Go down to about the bottom 1/4 of the page, just before differentials. http://www.carbibles.com/transmission_bible.html
