This would be going into a 1991 240. I have nothing at this point so everything is an option. Also, I am ignoring the transmission at this point cause I may go GM either way. Basically, this is what I have come to find out through reading and being told…

RB26DETT-Local guys would **** their pants.-I really like the TT idea, if it will fit.-It’s a GTR motor.-It can hold really good power in stock form.-The TT issue, hitting the steering. I am not sure how to solve this other than going single and that will be $$$.-The oil pan issue. Nothing major, but I need to be able to locate a RB25 oil pan and that is just another hassle.

RB30DET-Local guys would **** their pants-I really like the idea of a 3 liter turbo.-They can hold good power in stock form.-A little taller deck height and the hood would need to be persuaded a little.-I would need to get a block and rebuild it cause they are usually old. Plus, I would have to pay for shipping to the States.-I would have locate a cylinder head.-I would need to get several miscellaneous items, dip stick tube and dip stick, timing belt tesioner, wiring harness, ecu, etc.

Anything that I have missed?

The RB25DET and RB20DET just make too much since therefore they are not on the top of my list, but I would consider them. Perhaps I should think about a RB30DETT too, hhhmmm.

Ive heard rb25 head has a betterflow without the need for a twin to single conversion. BTW who cares. They both will kick some stupid amount of ***

I ran across this over on Zilvia...Quote »By KitaharaI've done tons and tons of research on this so I suppose I will share...

RB26DETT advantages over RB25DET: individual throttle bodies, solid lifters - means less valve float and better throttle response. Slightly stronger internals, and slightly stroked giving .1 more displacement (same bore).

I don't care enough about a single one of those advantages to rationalize the cost in getting an RB26DETT. Solid lifters are great, that's the biggest plus in my opinion - But it is not crucial to reaching my goals.

On ya and here's what you need to do to get the RB26DETT in: single turbo conversion, obviously some crazy wiring or after market computer, do something about the oil pan/front differential set up, custom drive shaft. Stock engine mounts. I wouldn't wish that work on anyone.

What I plan on doing: RB25DET with 1.5mm metal head gasket yielding about a 8.7:1 cr ratio I believe (help prevent detonation at higher boost), a set of cams, and a greddy e-manage or apex power fc system (I don't want to have to wire the loom and I want to have tuneability and expandability on the fly). Then there's the fmic, upgraded turbo, and fuel upgrades etc. I'm satisfied with the strength of the RB25 bottom end and transmission, so no work is needed there unless I am approaching crazy power.

Implications: Build a custom short ram intake set up to make the manifold fit under the hood), build ic piping, intake piping, and down pipe to save money since that would be expensive to source over seas. To save money, get an upgraded turbo domestically, and depending on my turbo selection, possibly build a log manifold.

The expensive parts that you need for this that would have to be bought over seas would be the computer, cams, head gasket, a set of routine replacement parts (I'd buy that stuff right away so it's just sitting in my garage in case) and RB engine mounts. It is my understanding that it is recomended when you swap an RB into an S14, you should use new RB engine mounts.

I'm sure I've left a few things out, but that's the cumulation of my RB research.[/quote]

Mckinney makes mount kits for the RB26 now. This is what I will be going with. My RB26 is on the way to me right now. They claim that the twins won't interfere with the steering shaft, so hopefully that's truth.

I plan on making 500 hp on my 26.. so there's my reason I don't think I need more displacement from an ancient rebuilt RB engine. Too much trouble..

You'll need custom downpipes for the twins if you go RB26. Oil sump modification is simple from what I've heard.

For me, an RB30 is out of the question. I'd never mess with that motor. I'd rather go though the trouble of dropping in a supra TT motor over modifiying an engine that was never introduced in this country.

26 without a doubt.. specially with it in a 240.. what your losing in power without goin with the rb30.. you are making up with the light weight of the 240..

im not a big fan of hybrid motors.. reminds me too much of LS/VTECs and their instibility

i did some research on the rb30det awhile ago so this is goin to help you let me get you email i'll send you the files... :Dhttp://home.iprimus.com.au/cobra30/twincam.htm here is a one link i know

if you do the RB30DET or may be the RB30DETT(what i want to do some day :xfingers ) get the mckinney mounting kit if the hood still will not close then cut the hood so it clears also remember to use the wiring harness of what ever the head it is ie: RB25DE head use rb25 wiring harness, also dont forget you need an aftermarket ECU it seem that everyone that has done the swap has used the PowerFC

all i have to say about the RB30 is it pure muscle :boink

I know the solution. And Exvitermini.com dosen't want you to know.

in a S13 i'd recommend a RB26 its a very well built motor and it loves to rev. in something with a bit more room the RB30 would be a good option. over here it can be a good budget alternative to a 26 if you have access to parts and information, one example is running 10's with a standard bottom end

the rb30 is great for the power yeild. the ones i get are totaly rebuilt and at 14 psi are putting down 450whp. though the engine is expensive for a total setup(motor, transmission, ecu) the engine itself is the price youd pay for a HKS turbo upgrade. the rb30 mounts the same on the 32x member and shims can be placed to space it downward. the head, since is the rb25, supports the greddy manifold. these things are no doubt wild but the torque marks are a bit of concern with the fast back and chassis flex. 388wtq at 3000 rpm!

Good input guys.

I will be doing my own piping, exhaust and probably my own intake mani so that stuff does not bother me. I have been talking to Sydneykid and he comes off as being all for the 30, but he has them readily avaliable. Also, he is telling me that they can handle just as power as the 26's can, in stock form.

One thing also that interests me about buying a 26 is that it would come with a wiring harness and ecu so then I could just run the emanage off that. I would more than likely go full standalone with the 30 = more $$$ right off the bat. Also, the 26 mainfold utilizes the individual throttle bodies.

I just need to sit down and figure out everything I want to do and set some goals. Then start getting prices and then go from there. I will be doing some research over the holidays.

Thanks.

i think at this point your biggest issue would be traction. All that power is meaningless if your tires aren't grabbing with that much power pushing such a light car..

i know this is 1 month since someone posted but i thought it needed to be said...

I agree. after my RB25DET swap which so far only has a full exhaust in the mod list.I have to take off in second gear when it rains so I don't just sit and spin. 800hp is going to be sick

yes yes yes, RB30DET would be the answer. I know a guy selling a complete RB25DET block, head, manifolds for $650. *cough*ProjectRB240sx*cough* if he still has it for sale. them, you could get an RB30ET block, go to one of your local junkyards and get a 92 to 94 maxima SE VE30DE wiring harness, computer and sensors & crap. it shares 99.9% of its pin outs with an RB25DET. slap a GReddy E-manage on it and away you go. well, it'd be a little more involved than that, but thats the abridged version. I would say you could be into it for about half the cost of an RB26DETT conversion. but, your hood wouldn't shut, oh well, time for a hood scoop! plus, 450rwhp on 15psi just sounds too damn good to pass up!

ITS ACTUALLY A RB25DE..... AND THANKS FOR THE PLUG.IF YOU WENT WITH MCKINNEY MOUNTS YOU COULD POSSIBLY GET THE HOOD TO CLOSE BECAUSE THE RB30 IS ACTUALLY ONLY 1.2 INCHES TALLER THAN A RB25.

I'M GETTING MORE SERIOUS ABOUT THE RB30 BUT IF I DO THAT I'LL GO FOR ALL MOTOR. SOMETHING ABOUT 3.2L, 10.5 TO 1 COMPRESSION, AND 8500 REDLINE SCREAMS BUILD ME.

Well that would be my ULTIMATE goal so not anytime soon. Dont get our hopes up though, lol.

I not sure what I am going to be doing, if anything, at this point.
