I'm a newbie trying to decide on a wheel/tire sizes for a 98 240 with SR20DET. I want a 17" Wheel and I want something that is going to be decide all around, not too wide, not too skinny. I tried a search but couldn't come up with a straight answer. Suggestions on both wheel AND tire size.

From what I have seen 7 inches wide is pretty standard for a 17" rim; its harder to find a 7.5" or 8" wide wheel with 17s. Really its up to you, what you are going to do with the car and what your tastes are.

As far as tires are concerned, I went to tirerack.com to check tires (you have probably been there B4) and it looks like a '98 with 17s will need 215/45-17s regardless if you have 7, 7.5, or 8 inch wide rims. From there it differs if you are gonna spring for z-rated high performance tires ($$$), or ones with a V or H ratings, ($$) and ($) respectively. Again it comes down to prefrences/priorities.

I'm no help when it comes to offsets, I have yet to learn about that.

For my money I'd look for the larger rims. With tires that wide your car will follow more of the ridges in the road, but once you get used to that, it really helps the feel of the car through the corners.

Hope that was some help and not too wordy.

As an old Pontiac once said, "Wider is better."

First off, why does having an SR affect tire choices? Weird. Anyway, there are PLENTY of 17x8 wheels, you just need to know where to look, if anything 17x7 is less common, but then again any site catering to US buyers will only show honda fitments. Tirerack is not the place to get any kind of information, their recomendations are an absolute joke. A 215/45-17 isn't even nearly close to being a good size for spirited driving, I'd go 235 minimum all the way around. Their application chart is very limited, based on the OE rolling diameter only. Try telling them you want a pair of 265s on the rear and they'll cry and hang up. Discount Tire Direct is a little better, and they even list wheel offsets, something Tirerack refuses to do even when you call.

see the FAQ guys, most of the questions are covered there. I dont think you need a 235, I'd be more worried about overall contact patch, and propper suspension tuning. I run 225-45-17 on my wheels, and those have plenty of contact patch for almost anyones needs.

I will be running a 255-40-17 on my rear wheels once I burn these up though, but that will be over a year away, with a turbo, LSD, C/f driveshaft, etc. so I'll need a bit more meat on the rears for traction.

I have to agree completely. Wheel shops here in the USA, online and offline, have a painfull bias towards Hondas and, like I said before, it depends what the car is going to be used for. If its just a driver then 7" with 215s might be enough, especially since then price of tires really starts to climb once you get outside the "Honda standard." Though seeing as UrbanImport has done an SR swap he might be looking to run 225s or even 235s.

I'm also running off of very little sleep and maybe I'm just talking out of my a$$ without realizing it. Oh well, hope this thread helps some...

I frorget right now, what are the rim widths for 225s and 235s?

lucas_240, you need to choose an aspect ratio, 225/??-17 to find a correct rim width, search for the tire size on tirerack and then look at the specs, it will most likely tell you what rim widths you should use with the tires. i've got 17x7.5 rims and run 235/45-17's in front (which will be change to a larger size after I do suspension upgrades) and 255/50-17 in the back, since the 255/50's are taller they fit on the same rim width as the smaller tires. note: these tires are not on a 240 so i don't know if they fit.

Because I probably want wider tires on a 300hp car than I would on a 150hp one.

I know choices are limited in the states but I have a connection to get buddy club stuff, so I can get just about any size I decide to go with.

OK however you want to put it.... "Wider tires than stock would probably be a good idea". Everybody happy with that comment? Thanks to the people that are trying to help here but its a simple question, if you don't have something helpful then I don't want to hear it.

that doesnt determine the "best" wheel and tire size. its just provides sizes and how close they are to your stock overall diameter.

like I said, my 225-45-17 are more than enough meat, and running a 255-40-17 on the rear(as I plan on doing) will be overkill, but I want to try it anyway.

FYI - 235 ZR45 17, 265ZR4017 are most popular size for S14 in Japan

If you have 4 lugs pattern it's hard to find rims wider than 17x8.

how exactly do you plan on doing that?

you need at LEAST a 9" wide wheel, more likely a 10". and a 315 is far more than you would EVER need. baring some kind of "bigger and better than chris may" setup, running a 255 or 265 in the back with a LSD should be more than adequate, unless you really want to screw your handling dynamics up.-chet

That's what I like to hear!

That actually might be a little big but props if you get it to work. I would like to run some 9" rims in the back with a 275 Nitto NT555R Drag Radial for the street, but probably a cheap 15" x 8" wheel with actual slicks for the track.

And, JUN sells Fender Flares that would easily accomodate a 9" or 10" rim with the correct offset.

He!!, I'm running 17" x 8" w/ 245/40/17's all around right now with absolutely no problems.

sultan, you are running 235 in front and 255 in the rear on a 7.5" wide wheel? dont you get a lot of bulge in the sidewall? isnt 255 a little too much tread for a 7.5" wheel?
