which turbo for my setup?

I have 2 rebuilt turbos and I'm trying to decide which to use. One is a UK spec S14 T28 (non-bb), and the other is a T28 hybrid SR turbo (GtiR/S14, good for up to 320 on SR's).

My main concern is that the hybrid will be too laggy when paired with my J30 VLSD, 256 poncams, and ebay tubular manifold. The car will not be used for drift or autocross, mainly DD and spirited back road driving. Whichever turbo I use will get the HKS actuator I have, so pretty much 1 bar of boost. The rest of my mods can easily support either turbo so that doesnt affect my decision.

Will the S14 turbo run out of steam with those mods? Will the hybrid boost so late that its not fun to drive unless I am driving in a straight line?

How much spool would I get back with the OEM mani over the tubular? What would I be losing as far as HP in ditching the tubular?

Any intelligent input is greatly appreciated.

thanks,

-M

If you want a fast-spooling engine, why don't you use the backhousing off your T25 and pair with the GTI-r unit; or even the the S14 unit. I use a pretty nice size turbocharger with the same J30 LSD and yeah it lags a bit, but if you can handle your car, you'll enjoy it more. As for the manifold, go with the tubular unit for accessibility as the stock is a PITA for removal and installation.

Neither of those are going to be laggy man. You don't even know what lag is.

+1 put the T25 back housing and wheel on your T28 hybrid. I had one on my sr for a long time and it was WICKED spool happy.

Yeah but they completely run out of steam before redline. Hell my GT28 runs out of steam before then.

Turbo lag is fantastic, it lets you drive around town getting 30mpg because you are always out of boost. Then if you want to crush someone's soul, just wind her up past 4k. Its a CA18, it is a small motor, if you want instant spool you have to run too small of a turbo.

Here here! I tuned one with a 17c and 264deg cams the other day. It's got just enough torque for puttering around town out of boost but when you stomp on it from a roll it forgets the meaning of "traction". The motor spins tires from 1st through at least 4th. THAT'S fun.

Hmm...using the GTiR compressor/wheel (T3 V1 or super 60 or something) is not an option, they were junk on the turbo when I bought it for parts (.86 hotside).

By my calculations, sizewise, the hybrid should roughly be the non ball bearing equivalent of a disco potato. I guess I'm just trying to avoid 6k of nothing then 2k of whiplash in each gear. I will have my butterflies hooked up correctly btw.

Good point about the gas mileage thing....for that reason alone I might end up going the bigger route.

Boost Boy, is the tubular that much easier to work on?....it is a bottom mount tubular.

thanks guys,

It is. I've done them both too many times and the tubular crap is easier.
