You would think the #1 state for probability of people using swear words would be the one whose state bird is the middle finger (NJ), but not so! According to a study by the Marchex Instititute:

Ohio tops the list for foul language. They should be frigging proud :bigthumb:
Rounding out the top five:
Maryland
NJ (seems like they need to work harder to be number one)
Louisiana
Illinois

And the states where folks are least likely to use bad language?

Washington State
Massachusetts (though I imagine the survey was not conducted during Yankee games at Fenway)
Arizona (rumor has it if AZHitman lived elsewhere, they'd be #2? j/k
Texas (kinda surprises me especially after Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys.)
Virginia (I guess VA really is for lovers..)

Attached link shows the country broken down into 3 groups, goody two shoe states, occasionally profane states, and sailors.

Marchex is a private enterprise. I don't believe their study was government funded, but perhaps an exercise to get noticed.

Curiously, their corporate headquarters is in Seattle, and they just happen to show Washington as the state that curses least.....WTF!? :chuckle: (sorry I'm a #3 NJ native).

I live in Virginia Beach, VA, where you can be ticketed for using foul language at the oceanfront (Tourist trap part of the beach).

Our motto here is "Come for Vacation, Leave on Probation." I know a guy who recently got violated every which way during a traffic stop because seemingly they were showing a rookie the ropes. Also same said rookie lied to the judge in court to win the conviction of Drunk in Public, even though there was no breath analysis on the scene, field sobriety test, or Breath analysis back at the station. Oh they charged him with DIP just to search him too.

Virginia is evil. Friend of mine sold someone a prescription pill at a concert. A CONCERT FOR FARK'S SAKE. Got locked up for two effing years in that horrible state. He got out in one piece but I have never been so personally upset at the legal system. How can we justify, as a society, taking two years from someone's life for a non-violent, consenting transaction over something so small?

I'm going off on a tangent. My point is, f*** Virginia. Thankfully its on the coast so I don't have to go through it on my travels.

Also, Virginia is evil. If you knew what is going on with the local voting there right now, you'd agree too.

Not a fan of VA myself, especially the southwest corner. I had a friend get pulled over for speeding in Dryden. He was doing 8 mph over the limit. The put him in the car, took him to the station, impounded his car, and he lost his license for 6 months. F*** them, feed them fish-heads. :squint:

I think every state (and town) has skeletons in their closets. That actually could be a fun thread by itself. Heck, in my little town in PA, there is an actual law on the books that it is illegal for a woman to wear cosmetics without a permit. But regarding Virginia, I agree there are some law enforcement issues there, but I know 3 little letters that offset some of that badness.....VIR (Virginia International Raceway) :dblthumb:

Well, I doubt anyone in VA would enforce such a law... unless it was a convenient way to throw someone in jail for some unrelated reason.

I suppose there'd be more "screwing" at that time than others. ;)

doing a little more research:

In Prince William county, VA it's illegal to cuss at each other. Perhaps that helps with the lower state numbers.

And in VA, it's illegal to tickle women, illegal to pat them on the tush, and (in Norfolk only) spitting on seagulls.
