Okay, my 90 to 95 swap has been done for some time now, but I am still without p/s. I tried to use a 91-93 pump (used from running car) and had no luck, so I got another and tried again (used from running car). Still bad results. So I bought a 1995 series (used from running car)...bad luck again. Should I try a 90 pump, or am I wasting my time?

The pump makes an awful WHURRRR sound thats audible from probably 3 blocks away...All the lines are correct, bled right, just doesn't seem to want to work. Any ideas?

hmmm... if it fits, it shouldn't of caused any problems. Do they all make a whirling noise? That's one weird problem. A long shot but, do you have enough PS fluid? Give some more details.

Thanks for replying! All pumps have made the whirling noise. Each time a pump was installed, connected, filled, and bled correctly (as by Chiltons anyway).

About your idea of not having enough fluid...After the whuring, I decided to drain the fluid, run the car(I ruined the pump previously before, it couldn't hurt) and add fluid. The odd thing that happened was that after about 1/4 of a quart made it in, the whuring began. Same result with p/s and ATF. Thought it was odd though.

Other tidbits: -The pressure line gets rock solid and vibrated tremendously each time. Definitely not normal.-Upon looking at a diagram, I noticed that I was missing the washer between the pump and the pressure line. However, I'm not to keen on thinking that a washer missing is going to cause the situation I have. I'm not to willing to throw away cash for another used pump and find out that the washer wasn't the issue. -Which brings me to where I am now. If I buy a new one and I get the same result, I can bring it back, say it was the wrong year and didn't fit (or some other excuse). Buuuut, I don't know which year to buy new. The 90 (year of the car and steering rack, but I'm not sure if it will mount to a 95 block) 91-93 (year of the lines that I needed to make the swap possible) or the 95 (year of the motor). -I am going to a junk yard that has from what I hear, a plentiful amount of s13s. I could take the 89/90 pressure line and try to hook it up to another pump, but again I am at a loss for what year to buy.

I would say that you need a 95 pump, but I'm not sure what the cause of the whirring sound is. My PS pump went bad and I had a similar condition, but 3 pumps in a row? You sure you have the lines hooked up correctly?

from the noise, it sounds like the pump isn't getting enough fluid run to it. Are you sure none of the lines have a crimp or are blocked or anything? They might still be able to drain, but not let enough fluid by under pressure.

No, there aren't any crimped lines. I got the car up on a lift at a shop that does 240s. They looked it over, I looked it over, we looked it over together on another car and nothing was out of place, bent, or crimped. Someone said something about "looping" but I'm not sure what they implied. Anyway, the next solution I think is going to be buying a brand new pump, doign ti agani, and if it doesn't work, take it back and say it didn't fit. ...

Does it feel normal when you turn the wheels or still take some muscle to turn?

It sounds like you have a blockage somewhere. Maybe you kinked/crunched a hose on the swap or have something crossed somewhere.

If the pump fits it's the right one. Chances are they have the same specs for all years since the chassis hasn't changed drastically. Maybe differences in output for hicas/non hicas versions but nothing serious. Did you drive the car for a bit with the ps noise to see if it'd go away? I've had them take a while before.

edit: beaten.....oh well

Yeah, I made the attempt to drive it. It works with the hellish noise, but doesn't get getter. Eventually the pump just got really hot and ended up failing. I'll just bleed the hell out of the next one and then if I get the noise still, I'll drive it around for a while, see if that helps and/or ruin it some more, then take it back to the auto parts store for a refund.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my silly problem. Hopefully it works out, but if not then I'll be investing in a non-ps rack. Thanks again!
