Ive been reading around here for a while now, just trying to learn a thing or two about the KA-T. Ive come to the conclusion that putting together my own kit is the way to go.My goals are a reliable 230-250whp on a stock bottom end. Ive given a lot of consideration to the Z31 turbo. It seems like a good size for my goals. But lately Ive been reading about people using other OEM turbos like the KKK K27 and TD05? from a Volvo 760.I would like some info about which OEm turbos you have used- what car it came from and any specs you can tell me. Im trying to figure out some alternatives to the Z31 turbo.

I was considering using a CT-26 off of a supra or MR2. Pretty good little turbo IMO. It also comes with an internal WG and if you get the downpipe from the MR2 you might even be able to easily clear the steering nukle.

If you decide to go this route let me know Ill hook you up with a Jspec CT-26 cheap.

Found some K26 turbo maps. Ones from a Porsche 924 and the others from an Audi 100. Some good Mitsubishi turbo maps and GT comp and turbine maps too.

With the toyota turbo you will need to modify an adapter plate in order to bolt it to a standard T3 manifold. I would use an adapter so that in the future it you decided to upgrade the turbo you would not need to reweld the manifold.

The turbos are very cheap. I can quote you well below $150 for one with the WG. Cant give you an exact price but I would guess in the aria of $100 for a ceramic turbine J-Spec if I can find one.

Price is the main reason why I was looking at the CT-26. Last time I was over there I had to dig through about 10 crappy turbos for every one good one I found. I got two in perfect shape though ;)

IMO if your looking for a really cheap turbo and you would like one that is in good shape. Your best option would be to buy a Z31 that is worn out and have it rebuilt with a T4 compressor. That way you would have a awsome turbo with plenty of flow on the turbine side and a large enough compresssor and housing so that you will have less heat per PSI. Im not sure what the price is to do the upgrade but, I regularly see the T4 compressor and housing on ebay for just over $100. My friend had his turbo rebuilt and spunn for about $300. So in total you would spend about $450 for a brand new hybrid turbo capable of probably well abouve 300hp.
