Post

I currently have a 91 s13 with an rb20det and quite a few bolt on mods. At the moment I'm likely sitting at around 260-280 whp. I've been looking in to options that will improve my low end torque and spool time, and just keep coming up with the same answer. Displacement. I've researched the hell out of doing an rb25 crank/rods, and bigger bore pistons, but the end result would be costly, and not a huge gain.

I've decided to look in to other options that will improve torque and spool time, and hopefully in the process improve weight distribution. I've been getting more and more into autocross, and I've got a buddy with an FD who's trying to convince me to start circuit racing. Basically I'm looking to meet my power/torque goals and at the same time make the weight of the engine sit in a more ideal position for better handling characteristics.

My question is: Would a VG30dett improve the handling of my car over the current rb20? I understand it may weigh similar or more than the rb20, but it seems to sit in an s13's engine bay in a much more ideal position, with minimal weight in front of the centerline of the wheels.

I know the swap is rarely done, and its super duper hard and all that crap. But my question is not how hard the swap is, but which engine would yield better weight distribution.

I'd love to hear your positive input! Thanks-Max

you would be better going with a s14 or newer sr. i have 300hp and tq on a s14 notchback with a gt28r turbo and 550's with the turbo manifold on there its spooled at 2800 rpms. kicks ***, pretty much factoy setup and very reliableim currently parting the car out due to financial issues if your interested let me know.

The post was asking if my current rb20 would provide better or worse weight distribution for handling purposes, over a vg30.

If I wanted suggestions on which motor I should put in my s13 (other than the 2 listed), then the post would have been about something along those lines.

I already have a 2.0L, I already have 260-280 whp, and a decently fast spooling turbo for the power level I'm at. I want much more torque, more power, and much much faster spool. An SR would be a total step backwards for my goals.

The handling difference between the two motors is going to be negligible. I realize your looking at it from two different avenues, but your not going to see much if any handling benes from swapping the two motors.

Dude, just upgrade your freaken RB. Its really not hard to squeeze 400 hp out of a rb20. Toss on S200 or a GT3071, and your still going to have quick spool. I doubt anyone makes a twin scroll manifold for a RB but, research that. Fvk, you could even go with a t3/t4 50 trim .48 ar exhaust housing and put down 400 hp with lightning spool.

The idea of swapping out your successful RB swap to go with another strange swap is really not smart at all. One engine with lots of potential vs another engine with lots of potential.. Which one requires less work? The one in your car..
