After some Google reseach i found out that 06 has a 2.93 final drive gearing compared to the 3.11 for the 05 Q45. The transmission also has wider gear spacing.

Does that mean the 05 is faster in a straight line than the 06?

Im asking because I have the choice of buying a new 05 or 06 Q45 tomorrow and want to know if the 4K more for the 06 is worth it?

Is this 2006 used? I ask because the VK45 is very sensitive to break-in procedures. The first couple thousand miles can strongly affect its longevity.

I'm sure someone else has the answer on which is quicker.

No, both are new and left over stocks.

Should be 3.13.

The 06 has the 19" wheels and the rear steering.

Neither one is really designed to be a straight line burner. If that's what you want, there are other cheaper cars out there.

I know that, but im asking about 05 vs 06 to make a choice tomorrow between them... is 4k worth it for the 06 over the 05? Both cars are new.

For the handling, maybe. For depreciation, probably.

"Worth it" is a personal preference. Your choice.

2006 will be quicker off the line than 2005, but I dont know by how much. Its supposed to also shift quicker and sharper due to some changes in the transmission hardware.

2006 has bluetooth, dont know if 2005 did. And like Brian said, rear steer and 19 inch wheels on the 2006 Sport.

I think the $4,000 premium is worth it.

The difference between the two as far as i can see is blue tooth and thats about it. From what i read on the internet... the 06 has the M45 transmission and a wider final drive ratio of 2.93 compared to the 3.11 for the 05 Q45 and the older transmission.

I got the 06 for a great deal.... 46k for a new 06 out the door.

I should pick up the car in two days or so.

Thanks

By the way.... The tire pressure monitor system shows -- on all 4 tires when i checked the system while the car was parked. Is that ok? Does the car have to be rolling in order for the tire monitor system to work?

Don't think so. Just needs ignition on. But check the OM for certainty.

You are the first on the board to have the ultra rare 2006 Q45. So we must have pictures.

TPS doesn't display until the car has moved a ways, on my 2005, a few blocks.

The 06 was not offered in a premium with heated/cooled seats and rear recliners. The 06 has leather wrapped steering, blue tooth and 19" wheels, hense the Q45s . I went with the 05 Premium b/c it was 10K cheaper at the time and figure I was going to change the wheels anyway.

Not sure what 1st gear ratio is on the 2006 Q45, or the M45 for that matter, but a 2.93 will give a slower acceleration than a 3.11 with the same 1st gear ratio. Also I understand that the cars with 2.93 rear axle ratio have wider gear spread in the trans than those with 3.11, which would make the car even slower on acceleration. If the 2.93 car has a lower 1st gear and wider ratios, it drops the high torque peak to a lower point in the rpm band than a 3.11 with closer ratios would, so while a 2.93 with a lower 1st gear (depending on overall ratio in 1st) might be faster off the line despite the higher rear end gear, the 3.11 geared car would likely catch and pass it somewhere along the way to the top speed, especially in the higher gears.

The 2.93 car would give slightly better fuel mileage though at cruising speeds.

I haven't done the math on the overall gear ratios in each combination, but a study of them in a comparison would tell the story, if both cars weigh the same and have equal HP. Overall gearing taking into account mph per 1000 rpm would tell the tale, all else being equal.

It's not uncommon in extreme high performance sport bikes with very high power output to be able to go faster in 5th gear than in 6th. It's even harder for cars with a much higher weight to HP and more frontal area/cd to redline top gear, and that includes most high performance cars except for the exotics. Higher axle ratios exacerbate the problem.

Understand that this Q45 is not U.S spec. So it have different options than the U.S sold Q45. This one is an 06 with premium package. This one engine is rated at 367HP.

Thats why i thought the 05 was faster than the 06. It surprised me that Infiniti would put a wider transmission gear ratio along with a longer final drive ratio. Oh well its a lux car so who really cares. I have a 1000HP car to go fast in a straight line.

Check what's in the hookah on the showroom floor when you go back.

Yup.If the final drive is higher, the 1st gear in the transmission must be lower to not compromise initial acceleration. Then at least one or more other ratios must be spaced wider. Usually it's the spread between 1st and 2nd gear. In that case, overall gearing in all other gears is still higher, resulting in less acceleration in each one. If gears are more evenlly spaced, then overall ratios will stil be higher, and the RPM drop between gears will usually put the engine in a lower part of the torque curve at each gearshift, making the car even slower yet. Engines that put out HP and torque at high RPM suffer this condition worse than big displacement ones that put out lots of torque at low RPM, but those usually run out of steam higher in the RPM band.

I believe that M45s are tuned slightly different than Q45s, which gives a little more torque at low RPM but less higher in the RPM band. The M is reputed to run out of breath at the higher end of the rpm, more so than the Q. Accordingly, an M45 should take a 2005 Q off the line but the Q should catch it somewhere around 100 mph and pull ahead slightly.I also think that a 2005 Q would beat the 2006 at least from 50 mph on up

What I'd like to see is a good 6 speed with a higher axle ratio. That would give enough gear splits to keep ratios close while allowing for a lower 1st gear, even gear splits, and maintaining lower RPM drops between gears, while keeping higher axle ratio in top (usually overdrive) 1 or 2 gears. The almost instant shifts from an automatic would reduce the added time shifting, resulting in a net gain across the board. It's easy to make an auto shift fast, and in fact, if done right, actually produces less wear and tear onit.

They're smaller horses. That's how they cram more of them in the motor. The hookah is so you can count them better.
