The very first iPod's used Firewire to sync and charge. Firewire is 12 volt. The next generation of iPods introduced the dock connector and the specification for the dock connector allowed the iPod to be charged by both Firewire (12v) and USB (5 volt) each on a different pin. Apple supported both methods of charging for several years but, unfortunately, with the models released last year, Apple eliminated support for Firewire charging. The only exception was the iPod Classic models. The Classic model still supported both Firewire and USB charging.
The most recently released models still only support USB charging. I'm not sure if the very latest iPod Classic model still supports Firewire charging or not.
At any rate, virtually all car adapters and the vast majority of home boom boxes and A/V receiver that support iPod still only support Firewire (12v) charging. So... other than the iPod Classic, the other iPod or iPhone models will charge attached to the EX-35's cable.
As mentioned by JCL622 (why don't people at least use their real first name in their posts?!?!?!), there are adapters that convert the Firewire 12 volt output from the EX-35 to 5V and redirect it to the correct pin. This is one of the most popular:
