Looks like a h1c1 with the variable vane stuff.

It's a HE351VE. Yeah, that box is the electronically controlled variable geometry exhaust housing. Think adjustable a/r on the exhaust housing.

BTW, none of the H1, H2, HY, or HX series ever had the VGT technology. Just the HE's.

FYI that turbo is about as long as a craftsman floor jack including the elbow, very very far from a bolt on prospect.

VGT, if you dont know what that means don't even think about buying that turbo. Unless your making some custom work, and actually are going to use VGT. Its used on new trucks, to help with emissions. Turbo supposed to spool quickly at low RPM by reducing exhaust A/R housing, and opening up the vanes/shutters at higher RPM to yeld an larger A/R housing or altering the angle at which exhaust gases hit the turbine wheel. But I'm not sure of that actual way they work. And its controlled by PWM from ECU through actuator depending on manifold pressure. But you would want large housing at high RPM and small housing at low RPM. But from cut away pics it looks like it changes angle.

So VGT would be useless, unless u could actually put it to work.

Go after something like HX35W or HY35W or never version HE351CW, or like HX40/HX35 hybrid.

Useless info FYI.And here is Holset VGT on Volvo diesel engine probably early D13 motor. Know Mack and Volvo trucks use them, I see them a lot at work. Last truck that broke down on the road due to bad turbo, thing the bill was like $4500. Know Volkswagen used/use them on their TDI diesels since back in 2003 or so. And Porsche think uses them on their Carrera from what I remember.

It is controlled via can-bus just to clarify.

garrett made these in the early 90s to.

garrett varied the vane angle the holset move a "wall" in and out.

there was also worries of these things holding up to higher egts for extended periods of time.

there were types that ran pneumatically like the pic, but 99% on ebay are the electronic verson.

i never used it cause it looks physically to massive to fit.

maybe do twin s60 garrett vnts some day. just for fun.

Can-bus IIRC isnt that a faster speed and multiplexed OBD2 system for ECU's/modules to communicate faster and with fewer wires. This has nothing or very little to do with VGT. DSM guys run VGT's on OBD2/1 with custom work.

In layman terms: PWM, pulse with modulation signal from ECU controls actuator in VGT housing acting on a rod/cam which opens closes vanes depending on inputs to ECU.

So DSM guys have figured out a way for the VGT to actually function? Or they just run it wide open?

DSM guys are not controlling the VGT's without using mechanical actuators. In all seriousness if you know of someone who is controlling this using the stock delphi actuator please link me! I have literally googled this and read every freaking link that seems remotely related to the holset VGT housings.

Evan

EDIT; I see what you were saying. The stock controller uses canbus protocall, and is not something you can just hook a PWM controller to.

240z4u, has it right. The newer VGTs are using a delphi "smart actuator" which runs over the CAN bus (J1939). Everything is digital now and the actuator actually speaks over CAN and gets its position command (as well as returning position feedback) over the CAN bus. There may have been some older actuators that were PWM, but it is definately CAN now. In fact if you do some digging online you will even find the schematics from the Dodge which show the interface to the actuator with the CAN+ and CAN- lines.

He is using an internal wastegate actuator to control that turbo, not the delphi smart controller... or any other electronic controller.
