what would be the better fit in my 90Q,,,,,,,,,a bose head unit from a 93-97 j30 or a bose unit from a 99.5 Qx4??????? like the look of the stock unit, but would eventually like to send the signal of the stock unit to an aftermarket amp then aftermarket speakers!!!

The one that Rex has in his Q looks damn good, and I thikn thats the same one from the 99 Qx4

I dont know why the J30 had a better sound system and some other accents that the flagship Q didnt have...

As far as fitment, theyre about teh same size so actual fitment isnt an issue.. Theres some OCD issues youll have to get over, if your that way... On Rex's, if you look closely, you can tell that the HU was designed for a molded dash, as the edges arent real clean, but you wouldnt notice it unless you were told where to look..... He was complaining about it at the meet, and the spot on his door panel that I couldnt even find.... He's as OCD as Ive seen, but the fitment didnt bother me a bit... Looked very nice and fits in well with the rest of the interior.....

The 99.5 QX4 would look much cleaner on the interior than would the J30 one, but I have yet to see a J30in person.....

Why do you need a new head unit? I have my stock one from my 91 and am running diamond audio speakers and an audiobahn amp and still am able to run my Sony 10-Disc.

As elwesso mentioned I have the "tyte 99 pathy swap" (<-- sarcasm/inside joke), but it may be the same from the QX4. The only diff I can say between the 2 you listed is the possible need from and adapter. They are both standard double DIN size head units and have the same mounting (ISO) locations.

If the Bose unit you are looking at has the DNR button on the bottom right hand corner, it should plug right in, if not it will need an adapter.

Here's a pic of mine to show the dash fitment (click for huge)

Here's a diagram of the back of the newer year model units. Will need adapter to use in your car.

Here's a diagram of the back of the older year model units. Won't need adapter to use in your car.

Hope this helps and don't forget to check out NICO's Car Audio Forum

If you want to run all aftermarket amps and speakers, look for a NON-Bose unit from a Maxima (95-99). They intregrate better with low-level converters.

If you use the Audio Link products, it will be fine to use Bose. There are other (plug-and-play) adapters on the market as well, but they are all ore expensive than going with a Non-Bose unit from the get-go.

Internlly, they are pretty mich the same except for the fact that the Bose sends an iunamplified balanced line signal that the adapters/converters then convert to standard line-level sign out to the amps whereas the Non-Bose units send a signal-level unit that can be converted with a run-of-the-mill low-level converter.

Neither way is as clean (sound) as an aftermarket unit with RCA outputs, but one way is a lot cheaper than the other.
