I have a '91 240sx se fastback. I'll be bringing it out from storage to start on some spring cleaning over the next couple of weeks. I plan on changing all of the fluids in the car... what I need to know is what fluids do you guys use and if there is anything I should look out for in different fluids...

will be changing:

- transmission fluid (it's a ka24de 5sp. transmission)- differential fluid (Super Hicas vlsd)- power steering fluid (super hicas)

if anyone has any recomendations of fluids to use, please post here...

BTW, before anyone says use the search tool, I have already tried and came up empty handed, If I had have found any info, I would not be wasting this space.

Thanks in advance!

Chris

Dont forget brake fluid: ValvolineSynPower DOT 3/4

Coolant: 70% distilled water, 1 bottle redline water wetter rest antifreeze( must be silicate free like Nissan green or Toyota red, since you are in canada, drain and refill rad, with pure coolant/antfreeze prior to winter, to re-establish a 50/50 mix)

The factory manual recommends GL-4 transmission oil, which is really hard to find at the parts store, since most of the stuff they stock is GL-5. Amsoil, Redline, and Quaker State all make GL-4 transmission oils. I am still looking for somebody locally that has GL-4!

justjuiceit why does it have to be local? http://www.myoilshop.com has all the redline you could ever need.

i agree with everything fred mentioned with the addition of redline 75w90 as your transmission fluid.

Well, it would be nice if its local for several reasons:1: Cost, synthetic usually costs more than non-synthetic (redline vs. quaker state); even if you go for redline you would have to pay for shipping2: I tried several of Redline's products in my former RX-7 and was not impressed; their gear oil seemed to thin3: I am in class all day and its very difficult to get over to my P.O. box before they close

There's another thread around here somewhere about GM Synchromesh transmission fluid. Apparently Honda guys really dig it, and I know at least one person around here likes it too. Pennzoil also makes a version. I don't know if this stuff is actually good for our transmissions, and it doesn't have a GL rating. It *does* say that it's safe with bronze, brass and copper synchros, which is a very important thing to consider.

Maybe someone who knows more about petroleum products can make sense of the specs on this stuff.

I believe both Redline MTL and MT-90 are GL4 and safe for our synchros, but you might want to check that out on the Redline website first.

I'd double check the 75w90 Redline oil...I don't think that's good news for KA synchros.

The gear oil for the transmission, I've seen very good results in many friends SR's and KA's with the following gear oils

Redline MT90 (not the 75w90, that's gl5)Motylgear (sold at pdm)

the diff, I personally use the Motul stuff sold in the metal can for diffs (also sold at pdm).

i've already got some of that MT90 for my own sr swap and from what I've felt with before and after, it's good stuff.

VLSD's are sealed units, meaning they require no special additives. the unit's internals are not exposed to the diff fluid.

GL5 for the LSDsome like to use additives too, but I have used only M1 GL5 in various Nissan LSD for a long time w/o problems.

if it will make you sleep better at night, then use it. the LSD additives are for clutch type LSD's that require a slightly higher coefficient of friction.

viscous LSD's are sealed. the use of an LSD additive in a VLSD may cause excess wear of the ring and pinion due to the unnesessary increase in friction.

Here's an interesing email I got back from the Castrol tech department: "Castrol North America no longer manufactures a GL-4 75w-90 product" So, your best bet is to find a mom and pops parts store and wipe off the dust! My guess is with the decline of manual transmissions in the U.S., the oil supply companies have less incentive to make fluids that are "more friendly" for manual transmissions. Who knows, it may be a money making idea too; if I person uses GL-5 and tears up his synchros, he has to have the transmission rebuild, if the transmission gets rebuild, they have to buy replacement fluid!
