Which exhaust is better?

I'm getting ready to buy a new exhaust system for my 89 240sx hatchback and I was wondering if any of you would mind sharing your opinions on the Tanabe Super Medallion 3" exhaust and the BRM 3" exhaust. Those two are my main choices since I have heard nothing but good things about both systems. Does anyone here run the Tanabe on a stock or mostly stock KA because I was curious as to how loud the 80mm piping would be? I've heard the BRM so I already have an idea as to what it sounds like. Any opinions or suggestions are welcome.

No, it was real. Greg uses Magnaflow components.

I have never heard a tanabe, but I had a BRM and loved it. I just have to go for the BRM. BTW, are you planning on going turbo? If not I might go for the 2.5 inch exhausts. Just my 2 cents.

I have Tanabe racing medallion exhaust and I love it!!!.....but I have the RB25 in my 240..so

larger than 3 is what i recommend for cars that have rb's everything else 3 for turbo and 2.5 for na...ka and 3 inches isnt too bad with brm

as far as turbo goes, yea in a few months i plan on doing a basic SR20 swap and then a few months later a bigger turbo upgrade

I wish we could get sound clips or something in here to listen to exhaust. I'm in the same situation trying to find a good after market exhaust. From what I've seen I like the Apexi N1 and the BRM but I haven't any of them. Just saw the way they looked on the cars

There are probably 10 clips on NICO of the BRM . Run a search for some sound clips. Recently someone posted some vids of his BRM exhaust. The dual tips and single sound the same so any version will do. The only change in sound comes from the resonator size.

Thats cool. You could get the 3 inch now, but I don't think you will gain peak performance until you get the SR. Just thought you should know.

since everybody says that its more worthwhile to get a 2.5" I've decided to drop the 3" idea. But I found a place that sells the Tanabe SMR exhuast with 60mm piping. Didn't even know that existed. How high pitched are they exactly? If they're considered annoying then I will just go for the BRM since everybody can agree that they are good.

3" piping on a ka na will make you lose quite a bit of bottom end. go with a 5 zigen fireball exhaust. it's made specially for na ka's. it has 60 mm piping.

I went with the custom 2.5 inch exhaust on my 240. Went to a muffler shop that had a mandrel bending machine, took the old exhaust, they bent it all 2.5 all the way. Went home, put in a low restriction cat, resonator, and a slapped a muffler on it. Sound good and i noticed a power increase. only $100 too

I'm running a 3" Uras RS on mine. Sounds really good and looks clean (no super-sized canister). I've got a couple of sound clips on my computer somewhere if you want to hear it.

Actually you only lose 1-3hp on the bottom end with a 3" unit but you gain anywhere from 8-12hp on the top end depending on what mods you have already! This discussion has had it's history of run time on this forum about which is better for the KA24. Honestly I think to each his own but I like my 3" plus I want to go SR later so just one less thing to get. 2.5" & 3" make about the same power but the question you have to ask yourself is where do you want it in the rpm band!

well i went for the 2.5" BRM since i had heard so many sound clips of them. and they sound so goooooood. ordered it tuesday. should be here by the end of next week.

i would advise going with the apex n1 catback system...i have a totally stock ka motor and ive been mistaken for a turbo because of deep throaty sound. i have it and it sounds better than anything ive ever heard.

its a red hatch. this weekend im putting on my rims (16" Rage Breaker 5 spoke on Falken ZX512s). and btw it is a 5 spd. its got some oxidation on the roof and left fender but im gonna get it painted soon. as far as a resonator goes i didnt have enough to give the extra $70 so i just passed on it.

Okay, I will keep an eye out for ya.

I should tell you that the resonator on the BRM makes a huge difference when it comes to sound. I have never heard one without it so I don't know what it will sound like. I guess a lot more raspy and loud. Should be interesting. You can always add one later if you want to.

Personally i thought you should have made your own exhaust with magnaflow components if thats your choice for a fraction of the cost.... but you cant go wrong with the brm it sounds and looks verynice but idk guess cause im broke

It would probably be tough to get the Magnaflow bits and the stainless mandrel bent piping at the same price BRM does. Add to that the fact that you'd need to know how to weld and make sure you get everything together for proper fitment.
