Ok i am doing a sr20 swap for a friend and payment is he is giving me his engine and transmission....i need the transmission cause mine grinds and makes some funky noises....so i am swaping that into my car.....then next thing i was going to take his engine and rip it apart and build it for 400+ HP...i was going to use his engine cause its only got 98k and mine has 118K miles....but when i started taking the engine out i found that it was overed in oil and looks like it leaks.....he said it runs good..My engine dosnt leak anywhere and runs good...180 copresion and everything....which engine should i take and rip apart to build...is it going t matter either way since it would be like starting with 0 miles? thanks

Seth

If your doing a full rebuild with seals and gaskets included then it doesn't matter which engine you choose.

yeah choose the one thats already out of the vehicle. a competent rebuild will cure all those problems.

choose depending on the condition of both, if one has ever overheated or whatever their history is, etc, ... but the rebuilding process will tell what kind of shape everything is in, so like above it's not big deal whichever engine you choose. if you get to a point where the guy goes "yeah your crank is missing a big chunk" then use the other engine.

i am doing all engine work myself...besides things that need to be done at a machine shop...things is i dont want to have to rip apart both...i want to take the one i am going to build and if thats the one in my car then ill swap them out and rip apart mine thats in there now....basically i am going to start from the bottom end and build my way up...going for 400+hp and still be pretty reliable lol

it can be very reliable as long as you're not that guy that races off every light, never warms up or cools down a turboed car, changes oil once a blue moon and just adds some when the oil light comes on... reliability is directly related to how well you monitor your car and how well you can diagnose problems early on and fix them... i mean just use common sense and have more then one setting for your fuel and boost... i mean you don't need 400 hp on tap when you're cruising on the highway to work... who gives a damn about the civic that revs his engine at you anyway...
