Hey people, I need some opinions here...I'm planning to buy my first car and can't make up my mind whether to buy a '91 240sx and slowly transform it into a silvia or save up for a 2.5RS. Which car would you choose if you were me and why?

i'd get the 240. i don't know anything about the 2.5RS, but they aren't turbo i know, and i don't think they have much power. plus they are FWD right? i'd rather have a AWD wrx or RWD 240

Of course you're going to have a lot of impartial people on a 240sx BB recommending a Subaru. It really depends on what you want or need. For example, if you live in an area that gets lots of snow, you may want to think about a 4wd. If you're going to do some track excursions (not the drag strip), the RWD 240sx is more fun. I've ridden in many Subaru's including 2.5RS and WRX both on and off the track. To me, they handle/perform well but feel cheap. The Nissan feels better and more refined, though many Subaru owners swear by them. Test drive both and decide for yourself which feels/fits better as you the one who's going to own it, no us.

Aren't all Subarus AWD? Even the 2.5 RS? Cause I was thinking about gettin one of those before I fell in love with my S14....

Yes, that's Subeys trademark. Older or new 2.5? Either way, you're going to kick some arse, both those cars are on my list. They're so different, it's really just your preference.

Now I need a few opinions while a thread like this is out. My current most likely options are: 97/98 240SX, 99' Impreza 2.5RS coupe, 94' ish MR2 Turbo, 95'ish 325i. What do you guys think? I know it's biased here, but try to consider each one. (assume insurance is low enough)

Well it really depends on what you want. I wouldn't go with the bmw though. If its not a m3 or m5 then don't get it. At least i woudn't get it. The mr2 is a good car but it is a little to small for me. They could be modded pretty good though and handle good. I think they look pretty good to. I woudn't get the 2.5rs, because then you would always you wish you got the wrx. I know i would be that way. But they are pretty good cars, my friend has one. I like the 240sx and that is why i'm trying to get one myself. Besides unless you get a wrx the 2.5rs would get boring, cuz its not fast enough to have really good 1/4 ets without expensive mods. At least with the 240sx you could get sideways if you wanted to. Out of those 4 I would most consider the 240sx and the mr2.

....I just noticed The Fred Quick Reply Box...it will be cool if this works.

I guess I'll mention something relevent though....it depends on how much money you have and are willing to spend really. I'd suggest getting the 240, you can learn to work on cars a bit easier and it will be cheaper to fix if/when stuff breaks.

...if this was your 2nd car though, I'd go with a 2.5RS and slowly work on that car :)I love the older impreza body style...put on a nice turbo or swap out the 2.5L engine for a WRX engine

edit:....cool, it works.....

a friend of mine had a 2.5RS and yes they are AWD...not a bad car but not much fun except rally-racing. the 240 kicked his *** on the auto-x....course he's not a very good driver. even with a better driver in the 2.5RS i still smoked it....(approx 10sec on a 1.10 track) another friend of mine also has one and thru on a turbo kit(relatively inexpensive) but had tons of tuning problems. it was fast but....still not quite as fun as the 240sx.

subaru 2.5rs= AWD praticality car w/ spirit 165hp/165lb torque (?)

Nissan 240sx= one of the last affordable true japanese sports cars offered in the US. 157 hp/ 160lb torque (?):rolleyes

Hey Name, hard to recommend something when we're not sure what you're looking for and what you wanna spend. All those cars on your list have their strengths and weakness. I'll give my take on them:

240sx. plus: reliable, fun to drive, inexpensive to maintain. great suspension. minus. underpowered

2.5 RS plus: AWD, very tossable, light, great bad weather car minus: cheaply made, underpowered.

BMW M3: Awesome handling, great performance, can put it right onto the track, comfortable. minus: expensive to maintain. will give you sticker shock when you get it serviced.

M5 - forget it, maintenance will kill you.

MR2: plus: nimble, tossable, peppy minus: cramped, small, not very attractive

Some other cars to consider:

Miata: plus: nimble, excellent handling, inexpensive, reliable fun sports car minus: not very fast, can't be 6' or taller to fit in one

Audi TT: plus: attractive, great handling, tossable car. minus: a little pricey both to buy and maintain, some people have trouble seeing out, twitchy handling at its limit

RX7: plus: very quick, fast, light, handles great minus: expensive to maintain, not everyone can work on them, fuel thirsty There are a lot of choices out there. Enjoy the test drives

hmm... about the miata... i'm 6'3" and fit.... but i know people that are only 6' and dont... it's a matter of proportion between upperbody and leg....

and the mk2 MR2 is a very very very good looking car.... def. better than the TT

an E36 325i (323 328 depending on age) is actually quite a car... don't fall into this if it's not an M it's nothing mentality....

240sx is probably my favorite car out there but the 2.5rs is a sweet deal they look really nice with the WRC widebody thier an amazingly clean car but i will have to agree with the others that it wouldent be much fun aside from the rally driving.

Hmmm... Well, lemme think for a sec. I listed the years because of the pricing. SO... Here's a little more info: I might get hooked up with M3 17s from a friend of my brother's. I'm 6'3, so will I fit in an MR2? The Subey has nearly the same power as a 240, and I can find some way of fixing that. Let's take into account now insurance, this will be my first car, and thus the BMW is probably out, anyone know #'s? Further suggestions?

i'd want the MR2 or the 240sx. insurance is bad, but its gonna be out the butt on any car just cause you are 16 and first car. i go for my license drivers test next monday at 1:10, and so my parents insurance is fixing to get a WHOLE lot more expensive. but drive smart, and it'll get better. oh, and get all the discounts you can, like drivers ed. and good grades, etc.

Yeah, I get them all, and my parents have really clean records. So hopefully it won't suck too bad. I'm not paying for that part, but my parents wont pay for it if its obsurd. Anyone got #'s?

If insurance is ok...get the MR2. It'll make a ton of power when you mod it. Its an MR, so it has great handling. Hands down get the MR2.

WRX swap into an older style Impreza is very expensive.

For the first question, get a 240. When the Scooby breaks it'll cost more. Plus there is more drivetrain loss in HP due to the AWD. Like it was said...if there is a lot of snow, or if you offroad/rally, get the 2.5.

I'm in GA and I don't plan on ever living somewhere any colder than here in Winter. So the AWD is just better than FWD, I hate FWD cause torque steer gets to be a real problem.

They're actually pretty common around here, usually a 93 or 94 in the paper. The MR2 is small I hear though. Anyone my size (6'3) driven one?

Yeah LOST is right. The mr2 is a great handling car with a really good driver. But they can get sideways real easy. It is hard to fix once it gets that way to cuz all the weight is on the back. As for the room in the car. I had know problem fitting into it and i'm 6'1 but i wasn't rideing the way i wanted to. I was in a more upright position. The headroom wasn't bad but couldn't lean the seat back how i like to. What about getting like a gsx or something like that. They can be modded to be really fast for a cheap. But then again maybe your insurance would be sort of expensive. But not any more then it would with the mr2.

Sorry for bringing up an old thread here, but I seem to have gotten the thing about the MR2 being hard to control a lot, so a 240 is once again first choice. Man, getting flamed on an MR2 board for no reason isn't fun.

Yeah, well I'm talking first cars here. This is getting on my nerves.
