Hi Everyone,

I am probably overthinking this, but not sure what brake lube to use. The manual requires Niglube RX-2 for the sliding pins and Molykote AS-880N on the hard ware and back of pads.

I purchased Permatex 24125 (Ceramic Extreme), I am pretty sure that is pretty close or exceeds the specs of the Molykote lube. However I am not sure about whether I can use it for the sliding pins as well. Does anyone know what the dealer uses?

Thanks.

Ian

For most models Nissan recommends Niglube Rx-2 on the slide pins, Molykote 7439 on the retainers, and Molykote AS-880N on the pads and faces.

Thanks. I can’t find niglube anywhere in Canada. Is there a known alternative?

Out of warranty, we use Permatex 24110 for practically everything at the shop. The main thing with the slide pins which differs from the retainers and faces is that the grease must be 100% rubber-compatible. The 24110 is, and it does a good job on the other parts too.

You can probably find Niglube at a Subaru dealer if you want the genuine article.

I just used this Permatex purple ceramic on all my cars as well. Now I’m seeing stories that it may swell the rubber sleeve that Nissan uses on their slide pins. The Permatex website lists this as 100 silicone based, which means it should be ok. So now I’m freaking out and wondering if I need to tear into all 3 cars and just use syl glyde to be safe? If I knew for sure that the rubber was epdm I wouldn’t sweat it.

Dunno about the purple, but I've never seen 24110 cause any issues on any Nissan. Personally, it's been on both my '04 Altie and the wife's '13 at both ends for ages. The rubber parts are fine, and neither car has ever had a problem with seizing pins or swelling parts. I do see a lot of chatter about it causing issues with Hondas and Subarus, maybe those guys are using a different type of rubber.

Toyotas as well. I’m not terribly concerned but Nissan does use the rubber sleeve on their guide pins. I may brake clean and wire brush the brackets at my next tire rotation. Cause we all know a caliper only seizes a few hundred miles from home and usually in front of the dealership. Hell, I ran black crc synthetic brake lube on everything for year with no issues. Meanwhile there’s reports of that stuff turning to a solid on caliper pins.
