on the 5sp transmission? i have my motor out, and dont have money right now to replace the whole transmission, and it makes a loud noise when i let off the gas in 1st-3rd, but when i push in the clutch, the noise is gone. So i know its not the throwout. when i get some money im gonna get the transmission rebuilt, i just want to fix this problem for now.

You can actually get to it without removing the whole bellhousing.

Look into the transmission bellhousing...you'll see the front cover with the input shaft sticking out of it....pull that off, and voila! - Input shaft bearing.

Yes you will be able to see the bearing but, You still have to seperate the cases and at a minimum have a proper puller to remove the pressed bearing from the shaft. You are still stuck without a way to press it back on other than to beat it on with a hammer. You would be better off to try to find a good used transmission for 150 bucks rather than attempt this without proper tools.

I can tell ya from experience that it is more than likely not the bearing in the front but rather it is the 2 bearings on the center plate. My advice, I would buy a used one for now and then pay a pro to rebuild your old one. It is a pretty difficult and involved process to replace the bearings in these trannies even if you are an experienced mechanic, not to mention that it REQUIRES a shop press to remove the bearings from the shafts.
